At this time, many farmers in Ca Mau province are very excited because the prices of giant freshwater prawns and climbing perch are at high levels. Thanks to that, each fish and shrimp farming household earns a profit of tens to hundreds of millions of dong, and they are ready to welcome a prosperous Tet.
Harvesting farmed shrimp and fish at the right time
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Guong, a farmer in U Minh district, Ca Mau province, excitedly shared: “Traders came to my house to buy giant freshwater prawns at 140,000 VND/kg. I raise 1.4 hectares of prawns combined with rice cultivation, my family earned more than 80 million VND from this shrimp crop. Combined with the money from selling rice, this year's Tet will definitely be abundant, allowing us to spend more comfortably.”
In addition to shrimp, goby fish is also a hot commodity in the market during Tet. Many traders are willing to pay high prices to farmers. 40 goby fish per kg are purchased by traders at the pond for 125,000 VND/kg, and retailed to customers at traditional markets for about 150,000 VND/kg.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tien, a farmer in Cai Nuoc district, Ca Mau province, said: "My family has just harvested nearly 1.5 tons of goby fish from a 1,200 m2 pond. After deducting all expenses, I still have a profit of over 120 million VND. This year's Tet will be financially free."
In recent years, the farming of giant freshwater prawns, goby fish... has brought high economic efficiency, helping many people in Ca Mau region have a good source of income.
The goby fish farming season is in full swing, with good prices, helping farmers raising this specialty fish have better income and a more fulfilling Tet holiday.
According to Ms. Tran Hong Ung, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of U Minh district, traders are buying giant freshwater prawns at a price that has increased sharply compared to previous years. "The shrimp crop is in season and prices are high, farmers are focusing on harvesting in an excited mood," Ms. Ung said.
Developing shrimp - rice model
"Shrimp hugging rice" is becoming a typical agricultural model, helping to increase income for farmers on the same area of cultivated land in the Mekong Delta localities, especially in Ca Mau province.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau province, the province currently has 43,000 hectares of shrimp-rice farming, with about 20,000 households participating, concentrated in the districts of Thoi Binh, U Minh, Tran Van Thoi...
In Ca Mau, the shrimp-rice model in Tri Phai and Tri Luc communes, Thoi Binh district, has been assessed and certified by Bureau Veritas as ASC. Bureau Veritas has also granted BAP certification to this model in Bien Bach Dong commune, Thoi Binh district...
Mr. Phan Hoang Vu, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau province, said that the locality has invested heavily in irrigation systems and dams to support this model.
At the same time, the agricultural sector has also promoted technology transfer and training, helping to improve production efficiency. The shrimp-rice model in Ca Mau has achieved international certifications such as ASC and BAP, creating the premise for expanding the scale and increasing product value.
"In the coming time, the provincial agricultural sector will continue to request relevant units to coordinate with international organizations to implement investment projects, support and guide people to develop aquaculture models combined with rice cultivation.
"Linking with businesses to organize production in the direction of increasing product value and quality. Thereby, contributing to increasing income and improving people's lives" - Mr. Vu emphasized.
