Specialty farming according to circular model

Báo Đồng NaiBáo Đồng Nai06/08/2023

In difficult economic times, consumers tighten their spending, the model of raising specialty animals that once brought huge profits is becoming more difficult to compete. Accordingly, the movement of raising specialty animals attracted many farmers to participate but then failed because the high-priced specialty products were not easy to sell.

But many farmers still persevere with specialty livestock and adjust their scale, while diversifying their products according to the circular agricultural model to still get rich in difficult times.

* Don't follow the trend

The model of raising specialty animals such as civets, pythons, snakes, soft-shell turtles, crocodiles, etc. is a high-priced product line with a picky customer base. Although there are farmers who have become rich thanks to raising specialty animals, this is not a popular model that anyone can participate in because of the large investment capital and high risk if not experienced. Therefore, to successfully raise specialty animals, farmers must meet the necessary and sufficient conditions.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Nghi, a farmer raising specialties in La Nga commune, Dinh Quan district, has been raising specialties for more than 20 years such as crocodiles, pythons, snakes, civets, porcupines, etc. He chose to raise many specialties that have the common characteristics of low care and high selling price because they are difficult to raise en masse. He persevered in keeping the profession even in years when the prices of specialties fell.

According to farmer NGUYEN QUOC NGHI, in the current difficult period, farmers should not invest in raising high-priced specialties on a large scale but should look at market demand to adjust output accordingly.

Mr. Nghi cited: “Currently, I am selling commercial snake meat at the farm for about 430,000 VND/kg. This is a high profit margin. Previously, many people who followed the snake farming trend failed. There were years when prices dropped sharply because of difficulty in consumption due to China stopping imports.”

According to Mr. Nghi, because the specialty farming model requires high investment capital, it requires farmers to have brains, techniques and "guts". The decisive factor for success or failure is the experience and skills of the farmer to know how to raise animals to grow quickly, and know how to handle diseases in animals. For example, with crocodiles, in the past, the risk of disease was very low, but today there are many diseases, especially sudden death disease, if there is a lack of experience, it is a failure. Thanks to good skills, not only do they raise commercial animals but they also breed their own breeds, which reduces investment costs and has additional income from selling breeds. Here, farming experience is accumulated from the learning process, especially having to pay tuition from the actual production process.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong is also a farmer with many years of experience raising specialty breeds such as pheasants, jungle fowls, etc. His farm is cooperating with many local households to expand the specialty breeding model and purchase their products. Mr. Phong shared: “Raising pheasants is suitable for urban agriculture because it can take advantage of small areas and the profit is much higher than raising other poultry species. Farmers must spend time researching and learning from experience to limit the risk of field loss, and must also learn to understand market demand before investing.”

* Upgrade for specialties

In order to improve the quality of specialties for more stable output, some cooperatives and specialty farms in the province are increasingly interested in investing in farming according to VietGAP and organic standards, building a chain from production to consumption, participating in OCOP product certification (One Commune One Product program) or to create consumer trust.

Mr. Hoang Cong Phuoc, Director of Doc Mo Farm Cooperative (Doc Mo Farm) said that the farm is supplying many specialties to the market such as: wild boar, rabbit... All products from crops and livestock on the farm are produced organically. In addition to fresh products, the farm invests in processing to create many unique and delicious dishes to serve diners such as: cold duck breast, garlic sausage, duck leg Rillettes... with the goal of creating good agricultural products with sustainable value for both the environment and people.

Sharing the story of getting rich from raising specialties, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Nghi added that he invested in a specialty farm following the garden - pond - cage model with a closed process. For example, the food for raising civets is fruit in the home garden. His farm raises about 800 crocodiles with a food source of discarded and dead chicks, so the cost is very cheap. There is a pond for raising miscellaneous fish to take advantage of leftover bait, snake and crocodile feces as fish food. Raising specialties according to the above circular chain not only helps him reduce costs but also limits the risk of output when the price of one livestock falls, the profit from other livestock compensates. In addition to diversifying the specialties, Mr. Nghi also created a YouTube channel to introduce his specialty farm. Currently, the main customers are restaurants and eateries that directly order about 30% of the output, the remaining quantity is sold to traders, so he is more proactive in output, and the products are also sold at better prices.
