What kind of high-tech shrimp farming makes a billionaire farmer in Ba Ria-Vung Tau earn 1 billion every 3 months?

Born into a family with a tradition of salt production, Mr. Nguyen Van Lac (An Thanh hamlet, An Ngai commune, Long Dien district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) researched and boldly switched to a high-tech shrimp farming model, creating a stable income. He is a lifelong learner.

Billionaire farmer raises shrimp using high-tech methods.

Born in 1970, Mr. Lac followed his family's salt-making profession in his youth. However, salt-making is hard work, and often results in low prices during bumper harvests, leading to unstable income.

In 2019, after learning from acquaintances, he decided to switch to shrimp farming. He invested in 8 ponds (1,000 m2/pond), applying high technology.

"Unlike conventional farming methods, high-tech farming uses 70% of the area for water treatment and 30% for shrimp farming. My family is currently farming shrimp on an area of 7 hectares, of which only 2 hectares are for farming ponds, the rest are for water treatment ponds," Mr. Lac shared.

Thanks to effective water management, along with technical support, seed supply, and shrimp feed provided by Vietnam Joint Stock Company, the first shrimp farming seasons have shown remarkable results.

Starting with one facility and eight ponds, he expanded to two facilities with 24 ponds, two ponds for raising whiteleg shrimp larvae, and a wastewater treatment system.

Mr. Nguyen Van Lac (far left), a successful high-tech shrimp farmer in An Ngai commune, Long Dien district, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, instructs workers at the facility on checking the water source for shrimp farming.

Every year, Mr. Nguyen Van Lac receives a Certificate of Commendation from Long Dien District and An Ngai Commune for his achievements in production, business, and support for social welfare work.

He also received three Certificates of Commendation from the Provincial Farmers' Association for his outstanding achievements in the "Farmers Competing to Build New Rural Areas" and "Farmers Competing in Excellent Production and Business" movements.

Shrimp larvae are released into nursery ponds for about 2-3 weeks, then transferred to dome-shaped structures for further rearing for 1.5 months. After that, they are moved to larger ponds, and after about 100-120 days, they can be harvested. With this continuous shrimp farming method, Mr. Lac's Manh Cuong 1 and 2 facilities harvest 6 shrimp crops per year.

The shrimp are uniform in size, have an attractive appearance, and firm flesh, so they are purchased by traders for consumption in Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Dak Lak, and several other provinces. After 3 months of farming, the shrimp reach a weight of 30-34 shrimp per kilogram, yielding 30-32 tons per crop (currently purchased at 170-180 thousand VND/kg), bringing the family a profit of 1 billion VND per crop.

As someone who started shrimp farming without formal training, he continuously learned and gained experience in the process. Investing in a dome-shaped system helped minimize the risk of disease outbreaks and losses, and especially maintained a stable water temperature for the shrimp.

During the end-of-year period, when temperatures drop to 21-22°C or on peak hot days when outdoor temperatures reach 36-38°C, the water temperature inside the dome-shaped structure remains at 27-32°C, creating favorable conditions for shrimp growth.

Throughout the farming process, shrimp require care at every stage, and the water source must be clean to ensure the shrimp are healthy, have a bright red color, and do not develop green or yellow skin around their mouths. "Raising shrimp is like having a newborn baby at home," Mr. Lac said, using a metaphor.

A heart of sharing

Not only do Mr. Lac's two businesses provide a stable income for his family, but they also create regular jobs for 32 local workers, with an average income of 7-9 million VND per person per month, and provide employment for dozens of seasonal workers.

Currently, he is expanding his high-tech shrimp farming model, preparing two more ponds with an area of 4,000m2/pond, aiming to create more jobs for local laborers, especially the children of disadvantaged farmer association members.

He is also willing to share his shrimp farming secrets and how to get rich from shrimp farming with those who intend to change careers, or with existing shrimp farmers who want to learn from his experience. "Learning and sharing every day helps me gain more experience and techniques to raise shrimp better," Mr. Lac shared.

According to Ms. Phan Thi Thao, Chairwoman of the An Ngai Commune Farmers' Association, Mr. Lac is a model farmer in the locality, the first person in the commune to raise shrimp on An Ngai land, which traditionally produces salt. His success has encouraged several households in the commune to boldly switch to shrimp farming and become wealthy through it.

"Besides production and business, he also pioneered in supporting scholarships, contributing to the education promotion association, the farmers' association, and charitable activities in the commune with an amount of 20-30 million VND per year," Ms. Thao said.
