Korean cars maintain competitive advantage in Vietnam

(HNMO) - Although no model stood out last month, and overall sales also declined, Hyundai - along with its South Korean "sibling" brand KIA - continues to be a favorite among Vietnamese consumers at this time.

With an abundant supply thanks to domestic assembly plants,
Hyundai has a more consistent performance compared to other car manufacturers in Vietnam.

Specifically, according to statistics, the South Korean brand (currently manufactured and assembled in Vietnam by TC Motor) sold 4,592 vehicles of all types to Vietnamese consumers in April 2023, a sharp decrease compared to 5,773 vehicles in March.

Thus, from the beginning of the year until now, Hyundai has sold 19,328 vehicles of all types in the domestic market, which is also the highest number. The company's best-selling model is the Accent. Although not brand new, this small sedan is performing well partly due to its main competitor, the Vios, undergoing a generational transition, leading to a temporary reduction in supply.

For its part, Toyota ranked second with 4,247 vehicles sold last month, bringing its total sales for the year to 17,813, with the best-selling model being the Corolla Cross SUV.

Among car manufacturers present in Vietnam, only VinFast and Honda saw an increase in sales volume last month. The third-ranked Vietnamese automaker recorded 3,798 units delivered to customers, thanks to a surge in deliveries of the VF e34 and VF 8 models. This new achievement is four times the 915 units sold in March.

However, VinFast's total sales volume in 2023 remained quite modest compared to its competitors, reaching only 5,487 vehicles, which is only higher than Suzuki among the top 10 best-selling car brands.

For its part, Honda ranked 7th, selling only 1,944 vehicles, mainly thanks to the exceptional growth of the Honda City (accounting for nearly 60% of sales). The remaining names in the best-selling group were Ford, KIA, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki…

The "tiny" crossover Sonet is currently KIA's best-selling model in Vietnam.

In terms of total car sales so far in 2023, besides the two "giants" Hyundai and Toyota mentioned above, the next best-selling manufacturers are Ford (11,966 vehicles), KIA (11,256 vehicles), and Mazda (9,028 vehicles).

Thus, among the top 5 brands, it's easy to see that the number of cars sold by the two South Korean brands still completely dominates their two Japanese rivals.

The results also show that THACO – which assembles and distributes Mazda, KIA, as well as Peugeot, BMW, etc. – is currently the largest car seller in Vietnam.
