Siri, the voice assistant from technology giant Apple.
On October 6th, French prosecutors announced they were opening an investigation into Apple's Siri voice assistant, following a complaint from a technology researcher alleging the company illegally collected data.
According to the Paris prosecutor's office, the case has been handed over to the police unit specializing in cybercrime, but no further details were provided.
Technology researcher Thomas Le Bonniec confirmed to the press that he was the person behind the complaint, filed by Ligue des Droits de l'Homme (LDH) – one of France's oldest human rights organizations.
LDH previously stated that the complaint alleges Apple collects, records, and analyzes conversations with Siri without user consent. The organization had not commented on October 6th.
Mr. Le Bonniec emphasized that opening a criminal investigation sends a clear message: "Fundamental rights are important, and there are still organizations and individuals determined to protect them."
Apple announced on October 6th that it has strengthened security measures for Siri since 2019 and continues to tighten them this year. Apple cited a January post on its website stating that conversations with Siri "are never shared with advertisers or sold to third parties."
