Earlier, a Legend Airlines (Romania) Airbus A340, which departed from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on December 21st bound for Nicaragua, was ordered to land at Vatry airport in eastern France. Police and military personnel sealed off the entire airport to facilitate the investigation.
The Paris prosecutor's office said the plane was detained by French authorities after information emerged that passengers on board "may be victims of human trafficking." Among the passengers were minors. The two men arrested were also on the flight.
According to the prosecutor's office, the National Unit for Combating Organized Crime (JUNALCO) is leading the investigation and is currently verifying the identities of 303 passengers and crew members, as well as examining the conditions of passenger transport and the purpose of their trip.
A source said the passengers may have planned to travel to Central America to seek illegal immigration into the United States or Canada.
In a statement posted on X , the Indian Embassy in France said it had been informed of the incident and was “investigating the situation and ensuring the safety of passengers.”
For her part, Liliana Bakayoko, the lawyer for Legend Airlines, asserted that the company had done nothing wrong and committed no crime. However, she added that the airline would take legal action if prosecutors brought charges.
Vatry Airport, located 150 km east of Paris, serves most low-cost airlines. Human trafficking offenses can be punishable by up to 20 years in prison in France.
