On July 25th, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital reported receiving a rare and complex case in the field of gastroenterology – a patient suffering from two malignant diseases simultaneously: colon cancer and rectal cancer.
A 66-year-old male patient from Ninh Binh was admitted to the hospital with symptoms including bowel dysfunction, constant urge to defecate, bloody stools, mucus in stools, and rapid weight loss over the past 3 months.
With typical symptoms of digestive disorders, patients undergo in-depth examinations using modern diagnostic systems to assess their overall condition, determine the stage of the disease, and recommend appropriate surgery.
The colonoscopy revealed a large tumor located in the rectum, about 10cm from the anus, and a second, smaller tumor in the right colon, approximately 2cm in size.
According to Dr. Pham Hoang Ha, head of the gastrointestinal surgery department at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, the patient is a special case diagnosed with both rectal and colon cancer simultaneously – a rare situation with a rate of only about 2-5% in colorectal cancer.
Following specialist consultation, the patient was scheduled for laparoscopic resection of the colon and rectum containing the tumor, along with removal of all metastatic lymph nodes in the abdominal cavity.
Thanks to modern laparoscopic surgical techniques and expert skills, the surgery went smoothly, successfully removing the tumor, preserving function, and allowing the patient to recover quickly.
Based on rare cases of colon and rectal cancer, Dr. Ha warns people to seek early medical attention if they experience changes in bowel habits, bloody stools, mucus in stool, or unexplained weight loss. They should also be aware of risk factors such as colon polyps, ulcerative colitis, or a family history of colorectal cancer in particular, and gastrointestinal cancer in general.
"Regular colonoscopy screenings every year are an effective way to detect and treat colorectal cancer early," Dr. Ha advised.
