Find out the best time to exercise for blood sugar levels

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên15/01/2025

It's well known that exercise helps control blood sugar levels, but when is the best time to exercise is controversial.

New research, just published in the medical journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism , has answered the question of whether exercising before or after breakfast is best to prevent blood sugar spikes.

To investigate the effects of pre- and post-meal exercise on post-meal blood sugar levels and appetite, researchers at the Department of Kinesiology and PhysicalEducation (KPE) at the University of Toronto (Canada) conducted a study on a group of participants, mainly women.

Exercising after breakfast results in lower postprandial blood glucose spikes than exercising before eating

They were asked to perform bodyweight interval training at home for 5 minutes before breakfast or 10 minutes after breakfast. These exercises could include jumping jacks, burpees, or mountain climbers.

Participants then had their blood sugar levels and appetite measured 2 hours after the meal.

The results found that exercising after breakfast is best for preventing post-meal blood sugar spikes, according to medical news site Medical Express.

At the same time, exercise at this time also leads to lower appetite.

It is normal for blood sugar levels to rise after eating carbohydrate meals, say experts Alexa Govette and Associate Professor Jenna Gillen. However, post-meal spikes in blood sugar increase the risk of cardiometabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes.

Govette said the results demonstrated that the timing of exercise relative to meals affects blood sugar levels and appetite.

One novel aspect of the study, Govette added, is that it shows that interval training using body weight at home is effective in preventing blood sugar spikes, according to Medical Express.

This is the first study to investigate the effects of pre- and post-meal exercise timing on glycemic response and appetite.

Next, the researchers hope to study more in people at risk for or already suffering from diabetes. They are also conducting studies comparing the effects of home-based bodyweight interval training with other types of exercise...
