According to information from the French Embassy in Vietnam, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tuan Cuong, philologist and Director of the Institute of Han Nom Studies, was elected on October 17, 2025, to the position of Foreign Correspondent of the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Arts, one of the five member academies of the French Institute.

He succeeds Professor Phan Huy Le, who was elected to the position in 2011 and died in 2018.
The Embassy expresses its gratitude to Professor Philippe Papin, Corresponding Member of the French Academy of Letters and Fine Arts, for his efforts to ensure that this position remains dedicated to studies on classical Vietnam.
The election of Professor Nguyen Tuan Cuong to the position of foreign correspondent member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Arts demonstrates France's recognition of the talent and scientific achievements of a Vietnamese scholar, with truly important research work.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Cuong, born in 1980 in the former Thai Binh province (now Hung Yen province), is currently the Director of the Institute of Han Nom Studies (under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) since 2015. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2019 and received a PhD in Philology, specializing in Han Nom in 2012 at the Academy of Social Sciences.
Previously, he graduated with a BA in Han Nom and BA in Chinese (2003), MA in Han Nom (2006) from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi ; and attended an intensive Japanese language course at the Kansai Japanese Language Institute, Japan Foundation, Osaka (2011-2012).
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Cuong was a lecturer at the Department of Han Nom, Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (2004-2014), Deputy Director of the Institute of Han Nom Studies (2014), and Deputy Head of the Department of Han Nom, Academy of Social Sciences (since 2016). He was also a visiting scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute, Harvard University (USA) from 2013-2014.
Internationally, he is Vice President of the International Woodblock Association, President of the Vietnam Chapter of the World Association of Chinese Characters, member of the Executive Board of the Vietnamica European Project (2019-2024), and a visiting professor at many prestigious universities in China and Taiwan (China). He also serves on the Editorial Board of many international scientific journals on Chinese Characters and Han Nom.
His main research interests focus on Sinology and Vietnamese Sinology, Han-Nom linguistics and script, classical Vietnamese and East Asian philology and literature, Confucianism in Vietnam, and historical Vietnamese.
