On the morning of September 12th, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in coordination with the People's Committee of Nguyen Binh Khiem commune, organized the implementation of the spraying of insecticide to control the sixth generation of rice leaf rollers to protect the rice crop and conducted mobile propaganda on pest and disease control for rice crop protection.
According to a survey by the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, Nguyen Binh Khiem commune has the highest density of rice pests/eggs in the city.
Representatives from the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection provided a quick update on the pest and disease situation, guiding farmers on the use of pesticides and pest control measures in general, and specifically targeting the small rice leaf roller. They also requested that the commune and local authorities intensify the dissemination of information on pest and disease control to protect the rice crop among farmers.
Last week, the weather in Hai Phong was characterized by alternating sunshine and rain, with average temperatures making pest control difficult and ineffective, leading to rapid pest growth and high densities.
To date, on the rice fields that have already headed (approximately 21,000 hectares), the small rice leaf roller, including adult small rice leaf rollers of the 6th generation, has been emerging in large numbers in the fields (the peak adult population has been from September 5th onwards). The common adult density is 5-10 individuals/m2, with some areas reaching 20-30 individuals/m2, and exceptionally, some areas reaching 50-70 individuals/m2.

The common egg density is 50-70 eggs/m2, with higher densities of 100-150 eggs/m2, and exceptionally high densities of 400-500 eggs/m2. The common density of larvae (first instar) is 30-40 larvae/m2, with higher densities of 80-100 larvae/m2, and exceptionally high densities of 200-300 larvae/m2.
In the coming period, the density of eggs and larvae will continue to increase in the fields, damaging the flag leaves in areas where rice has not yet headed. The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection warns that the density of the sixth generation of small rice leaf rollers this year is very high, many times higher than the same period in previous years. Therefore, localities need to continue to strengthen propaganda work and promptly implement pest control measures using the right pesticide, the right dosage, and at the right time.
