Gateway urban area converges comprehensive development potential
Phu My - a young and dynamic urban area at the Southeast gateway is becoming the focal point in the spatial development strategy of the extended Ho Chi Minh City area. With advantages in seaport, industrial and logistics infrastructure, and a strategic connection location, Phu My is expected to become an international port city and a leading logistics center in Vietnam in the next decade.
Since being merged into Ho Chi Minh City, Phu My (formerly part of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) has been reorganized with 5 administrative units including Tan Hai, Tan Phuoc, Phu My, Tan Thanh wards and Chau Pha commune. This expansion of space not only helps Ho Chi Minh City increase its development area, but also creates a new growth pole associated with the seaport corridor, industry and logistics services.

In the picture of regional urban development, Phu My plays the role of a “convergence point” of infrastructure and global supply chain, directly connected to the Cai Mep - Thi Vai deep-water port cluster - a port cluster that can receive large-tonnage mother ships, operating routes to Europe and America without transshipment. This is a special advantage that few cities in the Southeast Asian region have.
In addition to the seaport advantage, Phu My is also benefiting strongly from the inter-regional transport infrastructure system that is being invested synchronously. The Bien Hoa - Vung Tau, Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressways, along with National Highway 51 and the Bien Hoa - Cai Mep railway, once completed, will create a multi-directional and multi-directional transport network, connecting seamlessly from the seaport to Long Thanh international airport and key industrial zones.
In particular, the Cai Mep Ha area is being planned to become a logistics center with a scale of more than 1,700 hectares, associated with the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) model. This is considered the "nucleus" of the global supply chain, creating great added value for import and export activities, contributing directly to the national marine economic development strategy.
When the infrastructure is completed, Phu My will form a complete ecosystem between sea - land - sky, becoming a strategic intersection of the international supply chain, and at the same time a regional distribution and logistics center.
Benefit from the new development structure of Ho Chi Minh City
The expansion of urban space after Ho Chi Minh City merged with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau is creating a strong resonance effect. Three economic entities with their own characteristics - industry (Binh Duong), services - finance (Ho Chi Minh City) and logistics - seaport (Phu My) - when integrated will form a complete development triangle, competitive enough in the Asia - Pacific region.
In this structure, Phu My takes on the role of “logistics pillar” - a connection point for maritime, industry and international trade. Thanks to that, not only Ho Chi Minh City, but the entire Southeast region is given new growth momentum, aiming for double-digit growth and sustainable development, balancing industry - services - urban areas.

Speaking at the event “Kick-off project Maison Grand - Bigbang 1000 Stars” organized by Tumys Homes in collaboration with DKRS on October 8 in Ho Chi Minh City, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Vietnam Economic Institute, emphasized: “Phu My is holding an irreplaceable position in the planning of the Southern key economic zone. This is an area that has all the conditions to become the leading logistics center and international port city in Vietnam”.
He said that many years ago, he proposed the development orientation of Cai Mep - Thi Vai to become an international transit port, associated with a free trade zone and a modern seaport urban model. Up to now, that orientation is gradually becoming a reality, affirming Vietnam's strategic vision in repositioning its position on the global logistics map.
According to experts, in the context of the restructuring of the global supply chain, Vietnam is in a strategic position on the international shipping route, and Phu My is the "golden link" in that system. The long-term goal is to turn the Cai Mep - Thi Vai port cluster and the Phu My area into an indispensable destination in the global logistics chain, thereby helping Ho Chi Minh City affirm its role as an economic locomotive in Southeast Asia.
Associate Professor Dr. Tran Dinh Thien said that to meet the development requirements in the new period, Ho Chi Minh City needs to shift from the "ground-level urban" mindset to the "multi-spatial urban" mindset - that is, exploiting not only the ground but also the sea, sky, underground and digital spaces.
“Only by fully utilizing development spaces can we shorten the distance, reduce infrastructure load and form a multi-dimensional growth model, catching up with the world's mega-urban trend,” Mr. Thien emphasized.
Accordingly, Phu My will be an important support to realize that vision. With its special location between sea - port - industry - urban, Phu My is qualified to become the "heart" of the national marine economic and logistics development strategy.
From infrastructure to action - Phu My reaches regional level
When the international expressways and transit ports come into operation, Phu My will not only be an industrial center, but also become a regional commercial, service and logistics urban area. New urban areas, logistics service areas, distribution centers and free trade zones will form a continuous value chain, creating jobs, attracting residents and domestic and international businesses.

Mr. Tran Dinh Thien shares about the advantages of Phu My.
Phu My is expected to be a model development – a place connecting smart urban areas, green logistics and sustainable infrastructure. From here, the development momentum will not only stop within the city, but also spread to the entire Southeast region, creating a foundation for Vietnam to gradually form a global logistics ecosystem.
With the advantage of a deep-water port, strategic location and synchronous infrastructure, Phu My is taking steady steps on the journey to becoming an international port city and a leading logistics center in Southeast Asia.
The appearance of Phu My in the new development structure not only expands the growth margin for Ho Chi Minh City, but also creates a spillover effect for the entire Southern key economic region - a dynamic, integrated and ready-to-breakthrough region.
From potential to reality, Phu My is proving its capacity as a pioneering urban area – a place of connection, innovation and global integration, contributing to the journey of building Vietnam into a regional logistics and maritime trade center.
