At least three miners have died and 18 others may be buried under the rubble after a tunnel collapsed at an illegal gold mine in Zimbabwe.
On September 30, state-run television station ZBC reported that the accident occurred the previous day in Chegutu, about 120 kilometers west of the capital Harare.
According to local officials, the bodies of the victims have been recovered from the Bay Horse mine in Chegutu. Search and rescue operations for those still missing are underway with utmost urgency.
This Southern African nation has large reserves of platinum, diamonds, gold, coal, and copper. Due to economic decline, illegal mining has become rampant and often unsafe.
In February 2019, 24 miners died when an abandoned mine was flooded following torrential rains in central Zimbabwe.
