Recently, Professor Sharon Pickering, Vice-Chancellor of Monash University (Australia), held an online meeting with new student Truong Thi Hong Hanh from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Hong Hanh is one of the first students to receive the Vice-Chancellor's ASEAN Awards, a new scholarship program to support Southeast Asian students studying at Monash University. This scholarship will provide comprehensive financial support for Hong Hanh as she pursues the Advanced Bachelor of Pharmacy program in the 2026 academic year.
Truong Thi Hong Hanh is one of the first students to receive the Vice-Chancellor's ASEAN Awards scholarship from Monash University (Australia), worth a total of AUD 2.5 million, equivalent to VND 43.7 billion. The program aims to support outstanding undergraduate students in the ASEAN region, completely reducing the financial burden of studying, including tuition fees, travel, accommodation, visa fees, and other services. The scholarship has a competitive selection process and is open to outstanding candidates from 10 ASEAN member countries: Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
Following the introduction of the ASEAN Awards Scholarships in August 2025, Monash University continues to demonstrate its commitment to the ASEAN region through a new scholarship program – the ASEAN Pathway – worth AUD 1 million, equivalent to VND 17.5 billion.
The program supports outstanding ASEAN students during their studies at Monash College – a preparatory institution offering programs such as Diploma and Foundation Year, helping students prepare for and transition to Monash University.
Truong Thi Hong Hanh, representing Vietnam, successfully passed the rigorous selection process and won a full scholarship, beginning her studies at Monash in 2026. The first Vietnamese student to receive this special scholarship said she was extremely excited about the opportunity to study in Melbourne – a city with many cherished family memories.
Hong Hanh shared: “My father earned a Master's degree in Digital Communication from Monash, and my older sister also lives in Melbourne, so I am very happy to continue the family tradition. The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked in me a desire to contribute to vaccine research and development in the future. I researched many universities in Australia, and Monash's highly ranked pharmacy program impressed me. I feel very grateful that, thanks to this scholarship program, I can get closer to my dream job.”

Monash University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sharon Pickering, said that Hong Hanh's story is the reason Monash is always striving to make world-class education more accessible to countries in the region.
“More than just a financial aid program, the ASEAN Scholarship is designed to seek out talent, nurture aspirations, and open opportunities for students who wish to make a positive contribution to the community and society in the future. At the same time, the program aims to build a rich student community at Monash through the diverse perspectives and positive energy that students like Hanh bring,” Professor Sharon Pickering shared.
