
On the morning of September 2nd, the traditional boat racing competition of Giao Thuy district ( Nam Dinh province) was held on Giao Son canal with the participation of 10 men's and women's teams from 5 communes and towns in the district, attracting the attention, watching, and cheering of tens of thousands of people.

From early morning, tens of thousands of people crowded both banks of the Giao Son canal (Giao Thuy town, Giao Thuy district, Nam Dinh province) to watch the competing teams.

Each rowing team has 15 members. Traditional rowing has become a "trademark" of Giao Thuy district, achieving many high results at sports competitions in Nam Dinh province.
In communes with a strong tradition of rowing, such as Giao Hai, Giao Long, and Bach Long – areas closely associated with seafaring – people regularly practice together even while working and producing, fostering collective bonding and lasting health.

For many years, the boat racing competition has become a major festival for all the people of Giao Thuy district, along with a series of events taking place from mid-August to September 3rd.
The activities during the National Day celebrations on September 2nd in Giao Thuy district were vibrant, ranging from traditional to modern arts such as brass band competitions, folk dance contests, arts and culture performances by the education sector, boat racing, volleyball, football, etc., bringing together thousands of amateur athletes and artists to showcase their talents and contribute to creating a festive atmosphere for Independence Day on September 2nd.

After a series of dramatic and intense competitions, the women's rowing team from Giao Long commune (Giao Thuy district) won first prize. The women's rowing competition featured five teams competing in two rounds. Round 1 selected the three teams with the best scores to advance to the final round. In the final round, the three teams competed fiercely to determine the first, second, and third place winners.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy (38 years old, athlete of the Giao Long commune women's rowing team) shared that, to prepare for this year's tournament, she and the team members train for 3-5 hours every day to ensure their health and create a sense of camaraderie among the members.
"Although we're busy with work all year round, as the Independence Day holiday approaches, we're willing to put everything aside to practice and participate in competitions. In dragon boat racing, besides health and endurance, teamwork is essential to achieve high results," Thuy shared.

After a dramatic morning of competition, the Giao Long commune men's rowing team won first place.
Mr. Tran Van Quyet, Chairman of the People's Committee of Giao Long commune, said that Giao Long commune has a tradition of rowing for 30-40 years. In recent years, in competitions at Giao Thuy district and Nam Dinh province, Giao Long's men's and women's rowing teams have often achieved high results (winning first and second prizes).
"Many fishermen earn 40-50 million VND per day from their fishing boats, but they are willing to take time off to participate in boat races and cheer on the competing teams from their commune. For many years, Independence Day on September 2nd has become a popular tradition among the people in the commune," Mr. Quyet shared.

On the green track, the teams competed with great enthusiasm, while on the banks, crowds of people lined the entire stretch, cheering and encouraging them.

"For decades, it has been a tradition that every year on Independence Day, September 2nd, people in the commune temporarily set aside all their work to watch and cheer on the men's and women's rowing teams of the commune," shared Nguyen Hong Tuyen (33 years old, residing in Giao Long commune, Giao Thuy district).


The people of Giao Thuy district (Nam Dinh province) are living in a festive atmosphere as they enthusiastically cheer on and watch the dragon boat racing teams compete.

Many people sat on the second and third floors of the high-rise buildings along the Giao Son canal to watch the rowing teams compete.

This morning, Giao Thuy district also organized the 2024 Culture and Sports Festival with many spectacular artistic performances and group dances.
