Following reports on some websites in South Korea about pasteurized milk being contaminated with detergent and subsequently recalled, the Vietnam Food Safety Administration contacted the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) to verify the information in order to proactively control food safety.

MFDS, in coordination with local authorities, conducted an inspection at the Gwangju plant of Maeil Dairy Co., Ltd. Following the inspection, the incident involving the contamination of pasteurized milk products with detergent during production was investigated to determine the cause and the quantity of affected products.
The affected Original Maeil Milk (Sterilized) 200ml product was manufactured on September 19, 2024, at Maeil Dairy's Gwangju plant and has an expiration date of February 16, 2025. The incident was caused by an operational error during production, where the detergent valve was open for approximately one second, allowing the detergent (containing 2.8% sodium hydroxide) to mix into the product filling line. Based on equipment capacity, an estimated 50 products were affected per second. However, all products manufactured on the same day were voluntarily recalled by the company.
MFDS has requested the plant to rectify the issues and re-establish its operating plan to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Food Safety Administration also stated that the affected products are for domestic consumption in South Korea only (delivered to one location) and are not exported. The Administration will continue to update as new information is received from the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
