Sun Group assigned to invest in expanding Phu Quoc airport

According to Sun Group, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province has just approved Sun Group as the investor of the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project, to serve the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in 2027 and the long-term development of the pearl island.

The Provincial People's Committee officially granted the approval decision to Sun Group at the Conference to announce planning and promote investment in Kien Giang province on June 19.

The Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project has a total investment of VND 21,998 billion, implemented in two investment phases 2025-2027 and 2027-2030.

According to the plan, Phu Quoc airport will be upgraded to level 4E according to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), allowing the exploitation of wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747, 787, Airbus A350. The designed capacity will reach 20 million passengers per year by 2030, 4.5 times higher than the current capacity.

The runway infrastructure will be expanded with runway 1 and a new runway 2, to 3,500 m and 3,300 m, respectively. The parking system will be expanded to more than 100 positions, including 45 positions for wide-body aircraft.

The highlight of the project is the T2 international passenger terminal, whose architecture is inspired by the image of the Phoenix - a symbol of revival and sustainable development. The terminal is integrated with smart technology such as remote check-in, automatic baggage sorting, and biometric identification technology, helping to shorten the check-in time to only 15-20 seconds per person.

In addition, the project also builds a VIP terminal with the symbol of a sea eagle - a fish symbolizing the strength and spirit of the sea, serving heads of state and major international events. The entire project will be invested in a modern, synchronous and harmonious way with the landscape of the pearl island.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Bui Thanh Trung, Chairman ofSun Group Southern Region, said: "With only 18 months left to complete the project, we are committed to focusing resources to complete the project on schedule and with quality, contributing to making Phu Quoc a regional and international center for resort, ecology, finance and innovation."

According to Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam Uong Viet Dung, assessing this as a very important project, very large in scale and with urgent implementation time, the Authority will closely coordinate with the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, as well as the investor to carry out the tasks, and at the same time coordinate with aviation consulting agencies to ensure the project's construction progress.

This is the second aviation infrastructure project invested by Sun Group in the form of socialization, following the success of Van Don International Airport (Quang Ninh). Previously, the group was also granted an air transport license by the Ministry of Construction for Sun PhuQuoc Airways, aiming to become a resort airline, helping to strengthen the connection between Phu Quoc and domestic and international destinations.
