On August 1, according to information from the Department of Internal Medicine, Respiratory - Digestive, Phu Tho General Hospital, doctors have just admitted patient NTH (44 years old, Yen Lap district, Phu Tho) in a state of abdominal pain for 10 days. After examination and testing, gastric endoscopy, Doctor Hoang Dieu Huyen said the patient had gastritis, stomach food residue.

According to the patient, she had previously eaten bamboo shoots regularly. When she felt a dull pain in the epigastric region, with cramps and a burning sensation, she thought she had a stomach ache and bought medicine to take herself.

To treat Ms. H., the doctors had the patient fast, give her intravenous fluids, intravenous nutrition, and drink Coca-Cola for 2 consecutive days, 4.5 liters per day, reducing gastric secretion. By the 3rd day, the food mass had completely dissolved. The reason the doctor prescribed Coca-Cola is because the acids in this drink are similar to stomach acids, helping to digest fiber and destroy blockages.

According to Dr. Huyen, the case of patient H. was discovered and treated promptly. If this condition is discovered late and not treated early, it can lead to a very high risk of infection, poisoning, intestinal necrosis, multiple organ failure, and even death.

Doctors say that intestinal obstruction due to food residue is common in the elderly, children and people with underlying digestive diseases. Consuming large amounts of foods containing a lot of tannin (persimmons, guavas, etc.) or containing fibrous residue such as bamboo shoots is one of the risks of forming food residue during digestion.

In particular, if eaten when hungry, the stomach is empty, the concentration of stomach acid is high, fruits with a lot of fiber, the resin is easily precipitated, causing the plant fibers to stick together, forming a solid mass of residue. Common symptoms of food residue in the stomach are epigastric pain, bloating, flatulence, vomiting, nausea, bloating after eating, and constipation.

Accordingly, when experiencing signs of suspected intestinal obstruction, patients need to go to a medical facility for examination, determine the cause and timely treatment, avoiding life-threatening intestinal obstruction complications.
