Strengthening educational support for children with autism

Tạp chí Doanh NghiệpTạp chí Doanh Nghiệp29/11/2024

DNVN - The Singapore International Foundation (SIF)education project helps enhance the quality of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) education in Ho Chi Minh City by building the capacity of 170 teachers with special education expertise from 15 schools and one hospital.

The 5-year project "Teaching and Learning for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (TLCASD)" is organized with Ho Chi Minh City University of Education (HCMUE) and Rainbow Centre Singapore, aiming to enhance the capacity of educators in building inclusive learning environments for children with ASD through skills training programs and sharing best practices.

The project aims to equip teachers with special education expertise with deeper knowledge about autism and effective ways to work with children with ASD; develop a support system for educators to address the specific needs of students with ASD; and build a framework for working with parents and caregivers to support children with autism in a comprehensive manner.

Singapore International Foundation, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and Rainbow Centre Singapore held a project closing ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on November 28.

About 170 Vietnamese teachers participated in training workshops organized by Singapore International Volunteers (SIVs) from Rainbow Centre Singapore. Some of the teachers in the delegation also attended seminars and study tours in Singapore. These activities helped teachers improve their teaching practices and equipped them with knowledge to create inclusive learning environments for children with ASD. Of these, 10 teachers were selected to become core trainers to share their experiences and expertise with their colleagues in the field, ensuring the sustainability of the project and its continued value to the local education community.

All teachers who participated in the program reported gaining enhanced knowledge and skills and increased confidence in supporting students with ASD. Eighty percent of participating schools implemented changes to better meet the needs of children with ASD, including adopting proven practices to improve classroom communication and creating student-friendly learning environments.

Classroom design is modified to create separate learning areas and use visual aids to encourage communication and interaction between students. Teachers also apply practical activity-based interventions, using daily exercises to practice students' skills. These activities are tailored to students' interests and habits to promote the development of practical skills.

To extend support beyond the classroom, teachers have organized discussions and shared with parents useful strategies and resources to better support their children at home. These efforts have contributed to promoting inclusive and sustainable education for children.

Mr Jaryll Chan, Executive Director, Programmes, Singapore International Foundation (SIF), shared: “This project is a testament to what can be achieved when communities cross national boundaries to work together towards a common goal. Through the dedication and expertise of our partners and volunteers, we are building an inclusive education platform where children with Autism Spectrum Disorder receive the support they need to thrive. We are honoured to contribute to this meaningful cause together with Ho Chi Minh City University of Education and Rainbow Centre Singapore.”
