Still, figures from film statistics firm Exhibitor Relations show that the Sony Pictures-distributed film has grossed about $17.3 million in North America. Analyst David A. Gross said: “This is a rather lukewarm opening for an action film based on a popular video game, especially when compared to similar films like 'Warcraft' or 'Rampage'."
The movie "Gran Turismo" is adapted from the famous video game of the same name, and is based on a true story about the arduous journey of the main character Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe) to become a great racer. Mardenborough's dream of changing his life from behind the virtual steering wheel to becoming a professional speed racer was not supported by his father. In his eyes, it was simply a useless hobby. "Do you think you can play stupid car games and become a racer?" - the words of his father haunted Jann Mardenborough's mind like a ghost. Despite the doubts of his own family members, Mardenborough was still determined to pursue his goal of becoming a real racer. However, an accident on the track once again pushed him into a deadlock...
Although it did not achieve the expected release results in North America, "Gran Turismo" still received many positive responses from critics and audiences. The film received up to 96% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and was rated 7.2/10 on the world's largest movie database IMDb. Not only bringing eye-catching, thrilling action scenes, "Gran Turismo" also conveys to viewers the inspiration of the journey of "making dreams come true".
The ups and downs, the incidents that Mardenborough had to go through to become a famous British racing driver show that success does not come naturally. The journey of transformation and conquering the finish line of this young man brings the message: Anyone can succeed, if they practice hard and do not give up on their dreams.
Besides the excellent performance of young actor Archie Madekwe, director Neill Blomkamp's film is more attractive than ever thanks to the participation of famous stars such as Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, Djimon Hounson, Darren Barnet, Sang Heon Lee and Geri Halliwell-Horner (former member of the Spice Girls).
