Thailand "joins hands" to address regional and global challenges

Thailand and the United States have agreed to strengthen their Strategic Partnership on defense and economic cooperation, as well as exchange views on developments in Gaza, Ukraine and Myanmar and efforts to de-escalate tensions, the Thai Foreign Ministry said on February 13.

Earlier in the day, Thai Foreign Minister Panpree Bahiddha-Nukara made an official visit to Washington, where he held talks with his US counterpart Antony Blinken.

The Thai Foreign Ministry statement said: "The two sides agreed to promote cooperation under the Joint Communique on the Alliance and Strategic Partnership, especially in defense. The two sides will meet at the 2nd Strategic and Defense Dialogue (2+2) in Bangkok from February 28-29 this year, and on strengthening economic partnership, especially trade and investment, as well as efforts to address climate change."

According to a statement from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two sides highlighted 190 years of cooperation between the two countries, based on shared values ​​and common interests, and reaffirmed their commitment to jointly address regional and global challenges.

"The two sides also exchanged views on the regional situation, particularly the geopolitical context and the situation in Myanmar. The US welcomed Thailand's efforts to ease the situation, including Thailand's humanitarian initiative. The meeting also discussed developments in other areas, including the situation in Israel, Ukraine, and efforts to help release Thai hostages in Gaza," the statement said.

During the negotiations, Thailand also proposed to run for the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term.
