On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam (1995-2025), Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on social network X on July 11 to acknowledge this important milestone.

In September 2023, Vietnam and the United States announced the upgrading of their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace , cooperation and sustainable development.

“Thirty years ago, the United States and Vietnam began an extraordinary journey from former enemies to Comprehensive Strategic Partners,” wrote Secretary Rubio. “Today, we recognize this important milestone and reaffirm our commitment to work together to promote peace, prosperity, and security for a free and open Indo- Pacific region.”

30 years ago, on the night of July 11, 1995 (US time), President Bill Clinton officially announced the normalization of diplomatic relations with Vietnam.

In the early morning of July 12, 1995 (Vietnam time), Vietnamese Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet officially announced the normalization of diplomatic relations with the United States.

Since then, bilateral relations have been continuously upgraded. On July 25, 2013, the two countries established a Comprehensive Partnership.

The next important turning point will take place in September 2023, when US President Joe Biden pays a state visit to Vietnam. In Hanoi, the two countries announced the upgrade of their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Cooperation and Sustainable Development.
