The United NationsEducational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is expected to list the ancient city of Jericho, now an archaeological site in Area A of the West Bank, as a world heritage site for the State of Palestine.

Jericho is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world , dating back over 10,000 years, and is also the lowest city in the world, located 263 meters below sea level.

The city of Jericho is partly located in the Jordan Valley and is fully under the administration of the Palestinian Authority (PA).

The ancient city of Jericho and 52 other natural and cultural sites are expected to be put to a vote at the World Heritage Committee next September.

Located in the oasis town of Jericho, Tel al-Sultan is an archaeological site from the early Bronze Age (9,000 BC) and is believed to be the world's earliest known settlement.

Jericho is also home to Hisham's Palace, one of the largest archaeological sites in the Palestinian territories and home to the largest mosaic in the Middle East. UNESCO officials say the site has every potential to become a World Heritage Site.

Since 2011, UNESCO has recognized Palestine as a full state and recognized three other heritage sites in the West Bank: the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem (2012), the ancient steps in Battir (2014) and the Old City of Hebron, including the Tombs of the Patriarchs (2017).
