In the Round of 16 match of the 2024 Ho Chi Minh City 3-Cushion Carom Billiards World Cup, held from noon on May 25th, Frederic Caudron faced the prodigy Cho Myung-woo again. In their second encounter, Cho Myung-woo played much better than in their Round of 32 match, where he lost 25-40 to Caudron. The South Korean player even led at times, but the Belgian showed his class and gave Cho Myung-woo no chance to get revenge.
In the end, Caudron defeated Cho Myung-woo 50-41 after 26 innings. The player nicknamed "the genius" secured his place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Ho Chi Minh City 3-Cushion Carom World Cup.
Caudron displayed convincing form with their second consecutive victory against Cho Myung-woo.
Also in the round of 16, the phenomenon of Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards, Nguyen Chi Long, was "decoded". Chi Long played with great effort, but could not create an upset against the 13-time World Cup champion Eddy Merckx (from Belgium). The Vietnamese player lost 32-50 and was eliminated in the round of 16. However, this is considered a very successful tournament for Chi Long. The biggest surprise in the round of 16 was world number one Dick Jaspers' 30-50 loss to young talent Burak Hashas (Turkish, born in 2006). Dick Jaspers (born in 1965, Dutch) is one of the world's best snooker players with 29 World Cup titles and 5 World Championship titles.
Chi Long was unable to spring a surprise against the outstanding Merkcx.
In the other match of the round, which took place at 12 noon today, Kim Jun-tae defeated Kim Dong-ryong 50-39.
In the quarterfinals, the two matchups that have been determined so far are: Hashas vs. Eddy Merkcx, and Caudron vs. Kim Jun-tae.
Veteran player Jaspers was unexpectedly eliminated by an 18-year-old player.
The quarter-finals of the 2024 Ho Chi Minh City 3-Cushion Carom World Cup will begin at 5 PM today (May 25).
