Shu Qi, Park Chan-wook... 'invade' Venice Film Festival 2025

The 82nd Venice International Film Festival officially took place from August 27 to September 6, with 21 works selected from around the world to compete for the Golden Lion award.

This year, the most notable film is Shu Qi's debut film. After decades of stirring up the domestic and international film industry with roles that left an impression with their naturalness and subtle acting, the Taiwanese star will be coming to Venice for the first time in a new role with the film Girl , which she wrote and directed.

The film is set in the 1980s, revolving around the main character Lam Tieu Le who grew up in poverty and wanted to change her fate. When she met Ly Le Le - a woman with an independent and free personality, not afraid to break prejudices, Tieu Le made a new decision. However, this conflicted with the past of her mother - A Quyen.

The film is considered by critics to be a work full of femininity and deep inner emotions. Shu Qi is actually not too unfamiliar with the Venice Film Festival, having walked the red carpet many times as well as being a judge for the main category here in 2023.

Guillermo del Toro - filmmaker of The Shape of Water, The Labyrinth of Shennong... brings to Venice the work Frankenstein adapted from the classic novel of the same name by Mary Shelley, revolving around the confrontation between a patchwork monster and the scientist who created him. Greek-born director Yorgos Lanthimos, with his unique vision, once stirred up the 2024 Oscars with Poor Things , this year participates with Bugonia.

Korean director Park Chan-wook also returns with No Other Choice, starring Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin, which revolves around a man desperately looking for a job after being fired from his position of 25 years .

American filmmaker Noah Baumbach presents Jay Kelly , starring George Clooney, Adam Sandler and Laura Dern. The audience will follow the journey of a famous actor and his manager across Europe, reflecting on their life, legacy and relationships.

The remaining films come from various countries, mostly Italian and French filmmakers.

This year, the jury of the award is chaired by American filmmaker Alexander Payne. The jury also includes Chinese actress Zhao Tao - "muse" of director Jia Zhangke, Brazilian star Fernanda Torres, who has just been nominated for Best Actress at the 2025 Oscars, and filmmakers from France (Stéphane Brizé), Italy (Maura Delpero), Romania (Cristian Mungiu) and Iran (Mohammad Rasoulof).
