(CLO) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday (March 4) strongly condemned the new tariffs imposed on his country by US President Donald Trump.
As is well known, President Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Canada and Mexico. Canada immediately retaliated, triggering a trade war between the two countries, which are once close allies, threatening the billions of dollars worth of trade that flows between them every day.

In a scathing speech in Ottawa, Prime Minister Trudeau directly told Trump that while he considered the US President "an intelligent man," the decision to impose tariffs was an extremely "foolish" act.
Trump claimed that the tariffs were necessary to force Canada to act against the flow of undocumented immigrants and the smuggling of fentanyl across the border.
However, Trudeau completely rejected this argument, asserting that Canada was not a significant source of these problems in the US and calling Trump's claims about fentanyl "completely false."
When asked about Trump's motives for imposing tariffs, Prime Minister Trudeau suggested that the US president, who has repeatedly hinted at turning Canada into the 51st state of the US, "wants to see the Canadian economy collapse so it will be easier to annex us."
"The United States has launched a trade war with Canada," Trudeau declared. "Canadians are reasonable people. We are polite. But we will not back down from a war."
Trudeau stressed that Canada's retaliatory tariffs would remain in place until the U.S. removes the tariffs imposed on Canadian goods. "We don't want that to happen," he added.
Prime Minister Trudeau warned Americans that the trade war with Canada would severely damage the American economy: "Your government has chosen to do this to yourselves."
