Việt NamViệt Nam06/12/2024

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assigned the Ministry of Transport to coordinate with the Ministry of Planning and Investment to complete procedures related to Can Gio International Transit Port in December.
Can Gio International Transit Port has a total investment of more than 5 billion USD (equivalent to 128,000 billion VND) and is divided into 7 phases. Of which, phase 1 will be put into operation in 2027 and completed in 2045. With its location near international shipping routes passing through the East Sea, this is considered a super port project because it has many competitive advantages, attracting international goods from countries in the region such as Cambodia, Thailand, Brunei, Philippines, southern China... Recently, at the 5th Southeast Regional Coordination Council Conference with the theme "Double-digit economic growth in the Southeast region by 2025: Challenges, opportunities and solutions", Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh gave clear instructions on this super port project.

Perspective of Can Gio International Transit Port Project

Accordingly, the Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need to resolve difficulties and promote key projects in the region with a specific roadmap. For the Can Gio International Transit Port Project, the Government leader assigned the Ministry of Transport to coordinate with the Ministry of Planning and Investment to complete procedures in December. Previously, in March 2024, Ho Chi Minh City submitted to the Prime Minister a Project to study the construction of Can Gio International Transit Port, putting into operation phase 1 before 2030. According to the Project, the location of Can Gio International Transit Port will be located in Con Cho Islet (Thanh An Commune, Can Gio District). This is located at the mouth of Cai Mep - Thi Vai River, in Ganh Rai Bay, near international shipping routes passing through the East Sea, convenient for developing an international transit port. The project is expected to be competitive with Singapore and Malaysia.

According to the report of the Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City, the Project on Research and Construction of Can Gio International Transit Port sets the goal of building the port into an international transit center of Ho Chi Minh City, attracting shipping lines, transport companies, cargo owners and logistics service businesses at home and abroad to participate in the world transport supply chain. The total length of the main port is expected to be about 7km with a barge berth expected to be about 2km. The total area of the port is estimated at 571ha, of which about 469.5ha includes wharves, warehouses, internal traffic, housing areas for operating staff, technical infrastructure... and 101.5ha is the port's operating water area. It is estimated that the first year's cargo throughput through the port can reach 2.1 million TEUs (1 TEU equals 1 20-foot container). After 7 investment phases, the volume of goods passing through Can Gio International Transit Port will reach about 16.9 million TEUs by 2047, contributing to the budget 34,000 - 40,000 billion VND per year when operating at full capacity.
