In his opening remarks at the "MADANI Entrepreneurs" conference on August 5th in Penang, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that Malaysia is a country rich in oil, palm oil, and other natural resources, but previous administrations have ruined this by their own practices.
Sadly, previous administrations were plagued by the practice of officials demanding "kickbacks."
The Malaysian leader asserted that he "is not afraid of heavy criticism for trying to put an end to this situation. If I allowed this (corruption), how could our country develop?"
According to Anwar Ibrahim, these unethical practices existed in the past because no one dared to touch high-ranking officials.
Also at the Business Conference, when addressing the issue of extreme poverty that has drawn public attention, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reiterated the government's determination to eradicate it this year.
According to statistics, there are currently around 136,000 impoverished families in Malaysia, and this displeases him.
"Never think that I feel comfortable being Prime Minister at a time when some people can't even afford milk, school uniforms... while we ( politicians ) are busy arguing about other issues and vying for power," he said.
The Malaysian leader asserted, “The fundamental problems cannot be solved; therefore, I have said that I will not compromise under any circumstances and want to eradicate poverty this year.”
He also congratulated the Penang government on its efforts to combat poverty, noting that the state has the lowest number of impoverished people in the country.
Approximately 1,000 businesspeople and representatives from 40 federal and state agencies attended the conference here.
