The use of e-cigarettes is becoming increasingly popular among young people today, but few are aware of the serious impact it can have on their physical and mental health.

MSc. Nguyen Thanh Long, Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital, shared the case of patient NVC (26 years old), an office worker, who suffered from a mental disorder due to e-cigarette abuse.

Using e-cigarettes can have serious consequences for physical and mental health, and may even lead to death.

About five months before being hospitalized, Mr. C. had a conflict with his wife, leading to a divorce. Since then, he has been depressed, withdrawn, and constantly thinking about the divorce, causing him insomnia, poor appetite, and a pessimistic outlook on life.

To relieve his negative emotions, he started mixing marijuana with e-cigarette liquid and smoking continuously. This lasted all night, making him unable to work and causing him to fall asleep in bed. Although his mother discovered this and urged him to quit, he refused, forcing his family to admit him to a mental health institution for treatment.

According to MSc. Nguyen Thanh Long, patient NVC was diagnosed with a mental disorder due to cannabis use. Previously, he had used tobacco since high school to relieve stress, and later came into contact with e-cigarettes during his university years.

Initially just trying it out, he gradually transitioned to using e-cigarettes regularly. In recent months, to relieve work stress and emotional problems, he has been using e-cigarettes mixed with cannabis oil 20-25 times a day, leading to serious mental disorders such as insomnia, irritability, anger, and destructive behavior.

Dr. Vu Van Hoai, from the Substance Use and Behavioral Medicine Department at the Institute of Mental Health, warns that e-cigarettes are becoming an increasingly popular choice among young people, primarily due to curiosity, a wider variety of flavors compared to traditional cigarettes, or to aid in quitting smoking.

However, using e-cigarettes can have serious consequences for physical and mental health, and may even lead to death.

E-cigarettes contain high concentrations of liquid nicotine, which can lead to poisoning and even death if used improperly.

Nicotine is also addictive, causing users to feel anxious, depressed, and have difficulty quitting. In particular, e-cigarettes easily combine with other addictive substances such as marijuana, increasing the likelihood of marijuana addiction by 3.5 times.

Dr. Hoai also noted that using e-cigarettes containing nicotine not only increases the risk of nicotine addiction but also easily leads to mental illnesses, especially when users inhale cannabis oil through e-cigarettes. This form of consumption is becoming one of the most common ways young people consume cannabis today.
