The Nam Chien Hydropower Plant, constructed in 2005 and completed in 2012, has a capacity of 200 MW and a designed electricity output of 813 million kWh/year. It is currently managed and operated by Nam Chien Hydropower Joint Stock Company. This is one of the three largest hydropower plants in the province, and is considered by leading experts to be one of the most challenging hydropower projects to design and construct in Vietnam. The project features the first and largest concrete arch dam in Vietnam, with a curve facing upstream and a height of 135m. A pressure tunnel, 3.8m in diameter and nearly 10km long, runs through the mountain, connecting the main dam to the hydropower plant with an elevation difference of approximately 666m.
Stepping inside the Nam Chien Hydropower Plant, we were impressed by the scale and modernity of its two generating units and the integrated equipment system. "Safety for production - production must be safe" is the top priority, ensuring absolute safety for both personnel and equipment. Leading us on a tour of the plant, engineer Nguyen Van Hoa, the chief operator of the control center, shared: "Each area and department strictly adheres to operational procedures and monitors the entire process. In particular, the control center, with its modern equipment, is responsible for controlling, operating, and closely monitoring all systems and equipment in the electricity production line."

Since its establishment in 2003, Nam Chien Hydropower Company has proactively developed and implemented electricity production plans, adhering to safe reservoir operation procedures, efficiently utilizing water resources, and increasing electricity output. It has also consistently collaborated with local authorities in investing in, repairing, renovating, upgrading, and constructing new infrastructure to support socio -economic development, assist production, and stabilize the lives of people in resettlement areas.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Ha, Deputy General Director of Nam Chien Hydropower Joint Stock Company: To achieve the production and business growth target of 8% in 2025, the company has strengthened its monitoring of weather forecasts to proactively maximize water resource utilization and improve electricity production; proactively implemented flood and storm prevention plans; and carried out maintenance and repair of generating units to ensure safety and efficiency. Last year, the plant's commercial electricity output was estimated at 725 million kWh/764 million kWh, reaching 95% of the annual plan and 101% compared to the same period in 2024 (721 million kWh). In addition, the company maintained a high water level in the hydropower reservoir (approximately 945m), contributing to national energy security as stipulated by the Government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade .
In 2025, Nam Chien Hydropower Joint Stock Company is expected to achieve revenue of VND 897.8 billion, reaching 109% of the annual plan and 112.5% compared to the same period in 2024 (VND 798.33 billion); pre-tax profit is estimated at VND 283.73 billion, reaching 105% of the 2025 annual plan and 113.1% compared to the same period in 2024 (VND 798.33 billion). The company is expected to contribute an estimated VND 191.96 billion to the state budget, making a significant contribution to the province's growth target of 8% or more.

The Nam Chien hydropower plant is operational, providing stable employment for 115 local workers, with an average annual income of 223 million VND per person in 2025. Furthermore, it contributes to the protection and development of upstream forests through the payment of forest environmental service fees. In addition, the company actively participates in social welfare activities, building welfare facilities, showing gratitude, and alleviating poverty in Muong La commune. In 2025, it will provide 80 million VND in support to the people of Song Ma commune affected by rain and floods.
With the goal of enhancing electricity production capacity for the national grid, Nam Chien Hydropower Joint Stock Company continues to manage and operate the hydropower plant stably, safely, and efficiently; and to innovate in management and administration. At the same time, the company hopes the province will create favorable conditions, provide support, encourage, and allow the company to participate as the investor in renewable energy projects, initially focusing on small and medium-sized hydropower projects within the province's planning, and some solar power projects in Muong La, Muong Bu, and Chieng Hoa communes, where the land is arid, unsuitable for cultivation, or where annual crops yield low productivity. The company also requests the province to update solar and hydropower projects into the local planning, and to support the company in the appraisal and approval of investment policies, investor approval, compensation, land clearance, and land use conversion for new projects, expanding production and business, and contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality.
