Video footage of the plane crash shows the F-18 fighter jet accelerating rapidly and descending steeply before coming to a halt and turning around to plummet to the ground. A massive fireball rose in the direction of the crash, which the Spanish Air Force confirmed was within the base's perimeter.
The pilot, with over 1,000 hours of flight experience, ejected from the cockpit using the emergency mechanism and parachuted to the ground. However, he sustained injuries to his arms, legs, and hips during the landing.
The Spanish Air Force confirmed that the pilot had been taken to hospital and his life was not in danger.
The crash site was also located near a busy highway. According to the Spanish Air Force, some debris from the aircraft was scattered outside the base. The fighter jet was completely destroyed after crashing to the ground.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation. The F-18 crash at the Spanish base is the latest incident involving the country's F-18 squadron.
In 2017, an F-18 fighter jet crashed during takeoff from an air base near Madrid, killing the pilot. Prior to that, three F-18 crashes had occurred in the country in 2009, and another one in 2003.
The Spanish Air Force currently has 84 F-18s, and the European nation intends to replace this fleet with the F-35 fighter jet.
