Origin of 3 durians auctioned for 2.5 billion VND
Durian is a genus of plants in the Malvaceae family, Malvaceae order. Several species that produce edible fruit are called durians, the most common of which is "Durio zibethinus" (known as Southeast Asian Durian) which is the most common species of the genus. There are 30 recognized species in this genus, but only 9 produce edible fruit.
The durian tree is over 100 years old (the first fruit was auctioned and a business won the auction at a price of 350 million VND).
Durian trees were first planted in Vietnam more than 100 years ago (the durian variety has large seeds and thin flesh, commonly known as seed durian), originating from Southeast Asia, specifically the Borneo and Sumatra regions of Malaysia. The first place to plant them in Vietnam was Bien Hoa (Dong Nai), then they were widely planted in the Mekong Delta, Southeast, and Central Highlands.
In Vietnam, durian is grown the most in Dak Lak , currently the durian area of the province is about 35,000 hectares, the output is estimated at over 350,000 tons. And there are 3 popular durian varieties grown in this province including: seed durian, Ri6 durian, Dona durian.
Seed durian, also known by other names such as seed durian or traditional durian, originated from Indonesia. In Krong Pac district, Dak Lak province, there is still an ancient durian tree that is over 100 years old. Traditional durian is famous for its unique flavor, high viscosity and sweet taste, light aroma, not harsh.
Dona durian, also known as Monthong durian (Monthong durian variety), originated from Thailand and was introduced to Vietnam in the early 1990s. This is the durian variety with the highest area in Vietnam today, accounting for about 65% of the total planting area in the country. Dona durian is a strong growing variety, adaptable to many different ecological conditions, and especially thrives in areas with two distinct rainy and sunny seasons.
Dak Lak is the province with the largest durian area in the country with about 35,000 hectares, the output in 2024 is estimated to reach over 350,000 tons. (in the photo is Dona durian tree).
Ri6 durian is a famous specialty durian variety, originating from the Mekong Delta region in the early 1990s. The creator and owner of the Ri6 durian variety is Mr. Sau Ri, whose real name is Nguyen Minh Chau, who was born and raised in Hamlet 1, Binh Hoa Phuoc Commune, Long Ho District, Vinh Long Province. He has a son named Nguyen Minh Trung, who is currently continuing the tradition and developing the Ri6 durian variety in the family.
In the 1990s, Mr. Sau Ri used natural grafting techniques to create the unique Ri6 durian variety. This variety stands out for its yellow flesh, flat seeds and dry durian segments. Ri6 durian has a sweet taste, moderate fat content and delicate aroma. Ri6 durian is an easy-to-grow and care for variety, providing high productivity and quality. Highly appreciated by the farming community and the market, Ri6 durian has won many awards in fruit competitions and fairs in the Mekong Delta region, demonstrating the development and popularity of this variety in Vietnamese agriculture .
Contribute to social security
Three durians were auctioned within the framework of the 2nd Krong Pac Durian Festival, including: the first durian to be auctioned was taken from a 100-year-old tree grown at the CADA plantation; the second durian was a Dona durian carefully selected from dozens of durian growers and went through a rigorous selection process; the third durian was of the Ri6 variety, known as the "durian queen".
Within the framework of the Krong Pac Durian Festival, the People's Committee of Krong Pac district (Dak Lak) organized an auction of 3 durians including "ancient" durian, Dona, Ri6 and raised 2.55 billion VND.
Talking to Dan Viet Newspaper reporter, Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy, General Director of Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Corporation, one of the 6 people who won the Ri6 durian auction for 1.4 billion VND, shared that the main purpose of the durian auction was to raise funds for local social security work, along with that, businesses together contributed to creating a brand for Ri6 durian, honoring and enhancing the value of Vietnamese durian.
"The purpose of the auction is to contribute to social security, so winning this auction is the joy and happiness of the business," Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy shared.
Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy spoke at the durian auction (within the framework of the 2nd Krong Pac Durian Festival, 2024).
Ms. Vy also shared that at first she only thought this was an activity within the district and CEO Chanh Thu was very surprised that it brought such a big media effect. She and 6 other people joined hands to auction Ri6 durian for 1.4 billion to increase the value of Vietnamese durian (recently in China, a durian was also auctioned for 1 billion VND).
Sharing the same opinion with Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy, Ms. Yen Thu, Director of Hong Sang Fruit Company Limited (the person who won the Dona durian auction for 800 million VND and donated an additional 100 million VND to the locality for social security) shared: "My purpose in auctioning this durian is to contribute to social security work in the locality. Besides, the Dona durian variety is also exported a lot in Krong Pac, so I also want to honor the value of Krong Pac durian in particular and Vietnamese durian in general."
In addition to receiving the auctioned durian, the auction winner will also receive a gold-plated durian for display and souvenir.
Ms. Ngo Thi Minh Trinh, Vice Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Krong Pac district, said that the auction winner, in addition to receiving the durian they bought, will also receive a gold-plated durian for display and souvenir. And the entire auction proceeds will be used by the district to support social security for the people.
