According to Interfax , two senior defense sources said the move would be made during US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's visit to Germany on January 9 to meet with representatives of about 50 partner countries that have protected Ukraine in the Ramstein format.
The sources did not provide an exact amount of aid but said the package was expected to be “very substantial” but did not include the entire remaining $4 billion in funding approved by the US Congress for Kiev.
Additionally, the Biden administration's defense officials in charge of Ukraine reportedly contacted President-elect Donald Trump's transition team to discuss "all issues that we believe are important."
The new package will draw from existing stockpiles with the aim of Kiev receiving most of the weapons Washington has pledged by the time Mr Trump is sworn in on January 20.
The next meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the Ramstein format is scheduled for January 9.
In a related development, Politico reported that Ms. Laura Cooper, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, has resigned.
The Pentagon did not specify the reason for Cooper, who spent more than two decades at the agency, to resign, but Politico said that uncertainty about the Trump administration's Ukraine policy may have made her feel "uncomfortable."
According to Politico , Ms. Cooper played a huge role in coordinating massive US military aid shipments to Ukraine since Russia launched a special military operation in the neighboring Eastern European country in 2022.
