TPO - The Hanoi People's Committee has approved the proposal to demolish the "Shark's Jaw" building, suggesting the creation of an underground space in the existing square area and an expanded space after the demolition of the "Shark's Jaw" building.
The Hanoi People's Committee Office has just issued a notice summarizing the conclusions of Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan regarding the planning and organization of architectural and landscape space in the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square area. Specifically, the city agrees with the proposal to demolish the "Shark's Jaw" building and construct an underground space in the existing square area and an expanded space (after the demolition of the "Shark's Jaw" building). |
The "Shark's Jaw" building is a shopping mall located at 7 Dinh Tien Hoang Street (Hanoi). The building was constructed on the site of the former tram station, overlooking Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square and offering panoramic views of Hoan Kiem Lake. |
Construction began in 1990 and was completed in 1993. |
This building currently has 6 floors, mostly occupied by restaurants, cafes, and other establishments with different styles. |
The front of the building faces Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square, while the left side faces Hoan Kiem Lake. |
From the top of the building, visitors and locals can admire Hanoi's Old Quarter, The Huc Bridge, Turtle Tower, and the entire Hoan Kiem Lake... |
The proposal to demolish this structure has left many residents feeling regretful. |
Mr. Pham Dinh Quang (Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi) shared: "I feel very regretful" that the "Shark's Jaw" building is proposed for demolition. |
Like Mr. Quang, Mr. Nguyen Viet Hung, a long-time security guard at a store in the building, also expressed regret over the proposed demolition. He shared: "Although we regret it, if it helps to beautify the area and aligns with the overall planning, then we residents will all support it." |
At night, the "Shark's Jaw" building lights up, standing out in the area around Ho Guom Lake. The dazzling lights from the signs, restaurants, and cafes high above create a vibrant scene, attracting many tourists and locals to visit and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the pedestrian street. |
Regarding the research content and proposed solutions, the Hanoi City People's Committee approves the plan to demolish the "Shark's Jaw" building; proposes underground space in the existing square area and expanded space after the demolition of the "Shark's Jaw" building; and suggests studying approximately 3 basement levels, with specific proposed functions for each basement level. Access to the basement will be from a location adjacent to Dinh Liet Street. |

In addition, the City People's Committee requested a study on the impact of landscape changes on the facades of the Long Van - Hong Van buildings. The landscape of the Thuy Ta building, the Ho Guom Cultural Information Center, and the existing residential area adjacent to Cau Go Street will also be studied for potential changes. |
Speaking to Tien Phong newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Hong Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hang Bac Ward (Hoan Kiem District), said that demolishing the "Shark's Mouth" building would help to expand the space and landscape of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square. Residents in the surrounding area are also very excited and supportive, hoping the project will be implemented soon. |
