Director Nguyen Quang Dung (Dung "Khung") is the son of writer Nguyen Quang Sang. The director shared in the program "When We Are 20 " that, despite his father's fame, he never imposed his own direction on his children.

"My father never asked me what I did or how much money I earned. The important thing he always told his children was to always take care of their health, maintain a cheerful, sincere, and kind attitude."

"When I was a child, I could do whatever I wanted, as long as I didn't touch anything that was dangerous to myself."

Regarding his reasons for choosing filmmaking as his passion, Nguyen Quang Dung shared: "I was only an average student at school. I also played table tennis, but I suffered an injury, so I decided I couldn't pursue it professionally."

My father asked me about it, but I didn't know what field I wanted to pursue. I studied music, played music, and even applied to the Conservatory. At that time, the movie "The Wild Field" was showing on TV, and when I saw it, I blurted out, "Maybe I should study film, I'll be a director and you write the scripts."

Later, I passed the entrance exams for two schools. I intended to study at both, but the school year was too close, so I had to choose. At that time, my father was very close to Trinh Cong Son, so he took me to his house. He advised me: "Go study film because you'll get to travel around. If you still have inspiration to compose music later, you can study film." At that time, Trinh Cong Son was so famous that I listened to his advice and went to study film."

"Uncle Trinh Cong Son was so famous that I listened to his advice."

The director admitted that he received preferential treatment while studying film: "I felt that I received preferential treatment while studying at school because my father also contributed to the national film industry. But I was conscious of the need to study properly so as not to bring shame to my father."

Moreover, my father was acquainted with the teachers, so I didn't dare misbehave or risk getting scolded. And that field of study suited me well, so I felt like I was playing while studying, which was very enjoyable.”

The director revealed that he and his biological father are "opposite personalities," so he often doesn't receive praise from his father: "Actually, my father and I are very different. When he goes to see a movie, there are some he likes and some he doesn't. But he just says, 'It's okay.'"

The director shared the difficulties encountered in making the "Southern Forest Land" project.

Sharing his thoughts on the film project "Southern Forest Land," director Nguyen Quang Dung said that his biggest challenge was "compressing" the film into a running time of about two hours.

"My challenge was figuring out how to tell the story within two hours, taking the novel and the 11-episode series. Besides arranging the script and choosing characters, I also had to select a convincing character for little An."

It took me two years of casting to find someone who could play the role of little An so confidently. The third challenge was figuring out how to achieve my vision within that budget.”

He asserted, "An's transformation, and the transformations in the people An meets on her journey, will be different from novels and television series."
