On his personal page, Nguyen Quang Dung recounts stories about his father, the writer Nguyen Quang Sang. His father used to be a radio editor when he lived in Hanoi . In his son's memory, Nguyen Quang Sang used to host a column featuring essays and prose about the beauty of Vietnam.
Later, the writer wrote essays and personal reflections for newspapers about people, places, culture, etc. He used writing as a means of supporting his family of five.
Remembering my father Nguyen Quang Sang and the era of essays and prose.
"Most of my tuition and living expenses came from my father's articles and film scripts. Film scripts brought in the most money, but they were infrequent, while my father wrote for newspapers almost every day."

"He occasionally wrote scripts for cải lương (Vietnamese traditional opera), because at that time, theaters paid per performance. His philosophy was to earn a regular income to cover daily expenses. As for writing stories, that didn't bring in much money," wrote Nguyễn Quang Dũng.
The director reminisced about the time when essays and personal reflections were frequently published in newspapers. These were short, lighthearted works, telling true stories about real people, mixed with the author's thoughts and perspectives. In addition, he enjoyed reading short stories, serialized novels, poetry, and music...
"These types of writing are now almost 'extinct' in print newspapers, especially essays and personal reflections, which are even rarer. Perhaps people now have Facebook statuses and vlogs."
"I'm also part of a generation that's starting to get lazy about writing. So, I'll make vlogs about things that are familiar and dear to me, things I want more people to know about, things I want to develop or extend to preserve my memories," the director wrote.
On the occasion of Vietnam's National Day on September 2nd, Nguyen Quang Dung remembers his parents, a generation that experienced two wars and overcame difficulties to nurture hope for future generations.
"Let us remember and be grateful to those who dedicated their lives to building a better life for future generations!" - he reflected.
Nguyen Quang Dung and his culinary experiences.
On his personal YouTube channel, director Nguyen Quang Dung often shares restaurants, delicious dishes, and unique culinary experiences.
In a video with 470,000 views, he describes the crew meals – an experience of "eating delicious food for free, and even getting paid" because he's eating in his capacity as a director. "Crew meals" are dear to many artists; although not gourmet, they represent the warmth and camaraderie of fellow colleagues.
Nguyen Quang Dung described filming "Falling in Love with My Best Friend" with co-director Diep The Vinh, Kaity Nguyen, Tran Ngoc Vang, etc. The entire crew ate on the mountain pass in Sa Pa at 5 am before a scene. The dishes were usually local specialties from the filming location combined with rice in the Southern style; sometimes it was a buffet at a 5-star hotel, but each meal had its own unique flavor.

Nguyen Quang Dung's descriptions and shared experiences in his vlogs bear the resemblance of essays and personal reflections from the past. In the age of visual media, those words have transformed into speech, images, camera angles, background music, and more.
On his channel, Nguyen Quang Dung introduces restaurants he has frequented for many years. His culinary tastes are also very diverse, ranging from Northern to Southern Vietnamese dishes, from soups to dry dishes. For each famous dish like pho or broken rice, he recommends many different restaurants so that viewers can choose the place that best suits their taste.
All of this conveys a message about rich life experiences, respect for regional tastes, and the beauty of Vietnamese cuisine.
