In controversial posts that have since been deleted, Helmuth called Trump voters the "lowest, stupidest, and blindest" group of people, and "fascists." The posts were published on Bluesky after Trump's re-election and have recently been widely shared on social media platform X.
Ms. Helmuth later posted an apology. She stated that she had used offensive and inappropriate language that did not reflect Scientific American 's views. "I respect and value everyone in every political field. These articles, which I have since deleted, do not reflect my beliefs; they were a misrepresentation of the shock and confusion surrounding the election results," the editor-in-chief wrote.
Even before taking office, Trump faces the risk of opposition from many states.
Scientific American Chair Kimberly Lau confirmed Helmuth's resignation and said they are looking for a replacement. "We thank Laura for her four years leading Scientific American during a period when the journal won numerous major science media awards and witnessed the establishment of a redesigned digital newsroom. We wish her the best for the future," Lau said.
Founded in 1845, Scientific American is considered the oldest continuously published journal in the United States, specializing in science and technology information. The journal has published articles from over 200 Nobel laureates.
2024 marks the second year in the magazine's history that it has published an article supporting a US presidential candidate. In the article, Scientific American endorsed Kamala Harris and argued that Trump "threatens public health and safety, dismisses evidence, and instead supports nonsensical conspiracy theories."
Laura Helmuth became editor-in-chief of Scientific American in April 2020 after working for The Washington Post . Later that year, the magazine endorsed a US presidential candidate for the first time, Joe Biden, and criticized Trump for rejecting science.
