Tran Quyet Chien received over 400 million VND.
The Sharm el Sheikh 2024 World Cup billiards tournament is the final World Cup event of 2024. Prior to the tournament in Egypt, Tran Quyet Chien and Dick Jaspers were tied on points (248 points) in the rankings based on their performance across all World Cup events in 2024. Therefore, whoever progresses further in the Sharm el Sheikh World Cup will win the title of best player of the year (or season champion) in 2024.
Tran Quyet Chien and Dick Jaspers both reached the round of 16 and were eliminated. Vietnam's number one player lost to Sameh Sidhom with a score of 27-50 after 21 innings. Meanwhile, young player Chiem Hong Thai caused a major upset by defeating the current world number one, Dick Jaspers, with a score of 50-42.
Thus, after 7 World Cup stages in 2024, Tran Quyet Chien and Dick Jaspers are tied in terms of performance, both with 266 points. However, the title of best player of the 2024 season belongs to Jaspers. Meanwhile, Vietnam's number 1 player only finished in second place.
Tran Quyet Chien finished second in the race for the title of best billiards player of 2024.
According to the regulations of the World Carom Billiards Federation (UMB), in the event of a tie between two players, the player with the better performance in the most recent World Cup tournament will be awarded the title of Player of the Year. The most recent World Cup tournament took place in Seoul, South Korea, last November, and saw Dick Jaspers crowned champion. Therefore, the Dutch player won the championship title for the season, despite having the same score as Quyet Chien.
This is the first time UMB has applied a points system and awarded prizes to players based on their performance in all World Cup stages throughout the year. Jaspers received 30,000 euros (approximately 804 million VND). Tran Quyet Chien received 15,000 euros (approximately 402 million VND).
A successful year for Quyet Chien and Vietnamese billiards.
It's quite unfortunate for Vietnam's number one billiards player that he couldn't win the championship title and end 2024 on a high note. Just before the Seoul World Cup (November 2024), Tran Quyet Chien won the Veghel World Cup in the Netherlands in October. And at the Sharm el Sheikh World Cup currently taking place in Egypt (December 1-7), the player born in 1984 also didn't perform at his best. Quyet Chien played a total of 4 matches (3 in the group stage and 1 in the round of 16), but only won 1 match and lost 3.
Jaspers is the 2024 World Cup champion.
Nevertheless, 2024 was still the most successful year in Tran Quyet Chien's career, as he won two World Cup titles, in Bogota, Colombia and Veghel, Netherlands. In June of this year, the Vietnamese player also made history by reaching the number one position in the UMB world rankings.
Furthermore, Tran Quyet Chien's victory at the early World Cup stage (Bogota) also marked the beginning of the most successful year in the history of Vietnamese 3-cushion carom billiards in general. Immediately after Quyet Chien's World Cup Bogota win in March, Tran Duc Minh followed up with a surprising victory at the World Cup Ho Chi Minh City in May. Bao Phuong Vinh won the World Cup Ankara (Turkey) in June, before Tran Thanh Luc secured the world runner-up title at the 2024 World Championship in Binh Thuan in September.
