Vietnamese table tennis team unable to spring a surprise against defending champions Thailand and Singapore.

The Vietnamese men's and women's table tennis teams were unable to spring any surprises in the team events, facing strong opponents who were both reigning SEA Games champions.

Vietnam has only one win in the women's team event.

On December 13th, the Vietnamese table tennis team competed in both the men's and women's team events at the 33rd SEA Games. The Vietnamese team included Tran Mai Ngoc and Dinh Anh Hoang, the mixed doubles pair who shone and won gold medals at the 2023 Games held in Cambodia.

Accordingly, the Vietnamese women's table tennis team, consisting of Tran Mai Ngoc, Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh, and Mai Hoang My Trang, will face the Thai women's team (the champions of the women's team event at the 32nd SEA Games). The Vietnamese men's table tennis team, with Dinh Anh Hoang, Nguyen Duc Tuan, and Nguyen Anh Tu, will meet the Singapore team (the champions of the men's team event at the 32nd SEA Games).

The Thai women's team is the reigning SEA Games women's team champion. Vietnam's head coach, Vu Van Trung, stated that the Thai women's table tennis team is of a high caliber, having won a bronze medal at the Asian Games and advanced deep into the world championships.

In the women's team competition, Mai Hoang My Trang was the only winner, defeating Tamolwan 3-1 (11/9, 6/11, 11/8, 11/8). Dieu Khanh unfortunately lost to Suthasini 2-3 (4/11, 11/8, 7/11, 11/6, 10/12) and Orawan 0-3 (4/11, 5/11, 4/11). Mai Ngoc suffered a quick 0-3 defeat against Thailand's number one female player, Orawan. The Vietnamese women's team lost the match 1-3 overall.

Dieu Khanh had a clear chance to win in the second match against Suthasini, but unfortunately lost with a score of 2-3 (4/11, 11/8, 7/11, 11/6, 10/12).

Mai Hoang My Trang won 3-1 (11/9, 6/11, 11/8, 11/8) against Tamolwan.

The Vietnamese men's table tennis team also failed to overcome their higher-ranked opponents from Singapore. Dinh Anh Hoang and his teammates lost 1-3 to Singapore. Nguyen Anh Tu was the only player to secure a victory in this match.

Dinh Anh Hoang played two matches and lost both to Singaporean players, with scores of 1-3 and 0-3 respectively.

Nguyen Duc Tuan is the men's singles table tennis champion of the 31st SEA Games held on home soil in 2022. Duc Tuan also lost 0-3 to the Singaporean athlete.

Nguyen Anh Tu secured an impressive 3-1 victory against Chew. This was also the only win for the Vietnamese men's table tennis team against Singapore.

Both the Vietnamese men's and women's table tennis teams still have a chance to compete for a place in the semi-finals. The women's team is competing for second place in their group against the Philippines, while the men's team is competing for second place in their group against Indonesia.

The women's team event has 6 participating teams, with Vietnam in the same group as host country Thailand and the Philippines. The men's team event has 8 participating teams, with Vietnam in the same group as Myanmar, Singapore, and Indonesia. The format in both events is a single round-robin tournament, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.

Today (December 13th), the teams advancing to the semi-finals of the men's and women's team table tennis events will be determined. The semi-finals and finals will be contested on December 14th.
