"Brilliant Ashes" wins the Golden Lotus Award, "Southern Forest Land" goes home empty-handed.

On the evening of November 25th, the closing ceremony and awards presentation of the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival took place in Da Lat City.

In the feature film category, 16 works were selected to compete, including: Southern Forest Land, Brilliant Ashes; You and Trinh; Mrs. Nu's House; 578; 9; The Girl from the Past; The Little Girl Looking for a Husband; Peach, Pho and Piano; The Last Wife; Hong Ha Female Writer, Fanti; Jasmine Flower; The Anonymous; Mother, Here's the Butterfly; Ten: The Curse Returns.

In the end, "Brilliant Ashes " won 5 major awards including: Golden Lotus Award for Best Feature Film; Best Supporting Actor in a Feature Film (Le Cong Hoang); Best Director in a Feature Film (Bui Thac Chuyen); Best Cinematography in a Feature Film (Nguyen K'Linh) and Best Music in a Feature Film (Ton That An).

Previously, the film won the top prize at the Three Continents Film Festival in France, the Golden Kite Award 2023. Director Bui Thac Chuyen was the only one to give a speech on stage for about a minute after receiving the Golden Lotus Award.

He shared: "I still find it hard to believe because I made this film after 10 years of not making films. Making a film is really difficult."

After two years of Covid-19, the Vietnamese film industry is facing even greater difficulties. Therefore, for the Vietnamese film industry to develop strongly, we sincerely hope for the understanding and support of everyone."

At the 23rd Film Festival, three films shared the Silver Lotus Award: " Em và Trịnh" (You and Trinh); "Mẹ Ơi, Bướm Đây và Đào" (Mother, Here's the Butterfly and Peach), and "Phở và Piano" (Pho and Piano ).

"Con Nhót Mót Chồng" won the Jury Prize for Best Feature Film. Meanwhile, "Siêu Lừa Gặp Siêu Lầy" won the Audience Choice Award for Most Popular Film.

The Jury Prize for Best Feature Film went to "The Little Girl Who Wants a Husband". Em and Trinh were awarded the Majestic Highlands Prize for their work featuring beautiful cinematography set in Lam Dong province.

In the acting categories, Thai Hoa continued his winning streak by winning Best Actor for his role in "Con Nhot Mot Chong" (The Little Bird Hoping for a Husband) , but he was absent, so actor Tien Luat accepted the award on his behalf. He had previously won this award at the Golden Kite Awards ceremony in September.

Actresses Dinh Y Nhung and Mai Cat Vy from "Mom, Here's the Butterfly" jointly received the Best Actress award. In the Best Supporting Actress category, Bui Lan Huong, for her portrayal of the famous singer Khanh Ly in "You and Trinh," beat two strong contenders, Hanh Thuy ("Brilliant Ashes") and Kim Oanh ("The Last Wife") , to win the award.

However, Bui Lan Huong did not attend the closing ceremony, so her boyfriend, director Nguyen Quang Dung, accepted the award on her behalf.

Speaking at the closing ceremony and awards presentation of the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival, Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, Director of the Cinema Department and Head of the Organizing Committee of the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival, remarked that this year's festival brought artistic inspiration, excitement, and a lasting impression to film artists and audiences alike, as it was the festival with the largest number of participating films ever.

According to Mr. Thanh, from 177 films participating in the film festival, the selection committee chose 146 films, including 91 films for competition and 56 films in the panorama program.

Feature films are a genre that always receives public attention at film festivals.

"This year's film festival features many excellent feature films, with improved artistic quality, creativity in cinematic language, and unique explorations in storytelling."

The film crew, from producers, screenwriters, directors, actors, cinematographers, composers , sound engineers, and editors, is becoming increasingly professional.

"Sixteen feature films are competing with diverse and rich content and forms of expression. Many films have good ideological content and captivating artistic expression...", said the Director of the Department of Cinema.

Regarding the documentary film genre, Mr. Thanh said that the 31 films submitted for the competition cover a wide range of topics, reflecting all aspects of social life and serving political objectives.

"The quality of the films is quite consistent and reveals a new filmmaking style that approaches the language of world documentary cinema, showing new prospects for international integration in the field of documentary filmmaking, and the emergence of new creative trends in documentary films. Science films include some good, outstanding films," the Director of the Film Department assessed.
