Bang Di is not a famous name but she is quite persistent when she has been participating in the film industry for more than 10 years. From the first films in Green Summer Days, Magic Family 15 years ago, she also participated in films: End of the Runway, Paying the Price, Mask of Love, Steel Fangs, Road to Each Other, Camellia ... Especially, her roles in Southern Forest Land, Sticky Rice, Golden Boy, Life Gives Us How Many Times Twenty... left many impressions.
In a conversation with a reporter from Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper, she confided about her latest role in Ngoai's Gold as well as her career path.
- Reporter : How did you prepare for this role?
- I had to prepare more for this role than for previous projects. People often have an impression of me through villain roles. However, because it is a villain role, sometimes the depth of the character has not been exploited much so that the audience can see a different perspective on my acting ability. When participating in Ngoai's Gold , director Khuong Ngoc told me: "I don't want people to hate you." He wanted me to show that the character is also pitiful, has hidden corners that anyone watching can see themselves in the character.
The two of us spent a lot of time talking about the characters, because the role in the film itself did not have any model for me to exploit. I had to find my own way of thinking and acting. Reading the script was one thing, because when acting, even if it was just a normal scene, the director did not let me act superficially, I had to create different layers of emotions.

- How did you find a way to solve that difficult problem for the director?
- I like working with demanding directors. That is also the reason why, when Mr. Khuong Ngoc said he wanted me to participate in this project, I immediately agreed even though I did not know what role I was assigned at that time. However, through the films he has made and listening to people talk about his way of working, I see that this is a director with a very new way of thinking and perspective on characters. That is also what I need so that every time I appear, the audience will find it interesting.
When working, Mr. Khuong Ngoc always set difficult requirements for me. There were scenes where I had to use all my strength to scream and curse, so there were days when the filming ended, my body was shaking as if I had used up all my breath and strength.
- During that process, was there a time when you got off-key or got scolded by the director?
- I often hear people say that Mr. Khuong Ngoc is very difficult, if I don't perform well he even scolds me. But with me, he is very patient, gentle and never scolds me even though I don't always do well. When I don't perform well, he gently analyzes so that I can do it again.
Perhaps, because from the very beginning when I joined, I told him to be more patient with me. Because, if you count from Southern Forest Land to when I joined this film, in the past 3 years, I have not acted in any films or participated in any work related to art, only focusing on business. Therefore, I am afraid that I will forget the feeling of being on the set.
Maybe that’s why he’s gentler and more sympathetic towards me. With other actors, he’ll always say “I can do it, you can do it”. But with me, he always encourages me “don’t think you can’t do it”. That’s how he gives me more motivation.

- Looking back at this role, are you satisfied?
- I never felt like I did 100% well. Maybe when people watch the official film, through many editing stages, the bad parts of me have been cut out. I always think that a film is the effort of everyone.
- After 3 years of not participating in any art projects, how do you nurture your emotions and passion for the profession?
- I have to admit that I was swept away by my personal business. If you look back at my acting career, you will see that I only act in one film every 2 years. After finishing filming Southern Forest Land, I focused on my business. Maybe because of the pressure, it swept me away, so I only returned to cinema 3 years later. Although I nodded in agreement, I was still very confused. I didn't know if I would do well after such a long break. If not, it would be a step back for me because I had done well in the previous project. That was also a pressure.
Besides, because in this film I have to transform into a mother, while in real life I do not have a husband or children, so the feeling about married life is not like the character. I have to find every way to make the audience believe when watching the film. During the preparation process, I had to look for a lot of documents, talk to people who have families.
There may be details that are similar or different from the movie, but they are pieces that I put into my character. I also always remind myself that I am Thuong (character name), not Bang Di. That is the reason why, after the project ended, I could not get out of the character. I had to spend a week meditating to let go of everything that belonged to the character.

- Have you ever wondered why directors often choose you for personality roles or villain roles?
- I think at first it might be because my appearance when playing the role will help me portray that type of character. Besides, all the villain roles I have played are not one-dimensional villains. That requires the actor's acting technique to show the diversity of the character's emotions. Maybe that's why when I auditioned and met the directors, they realized that and gave me special roles.

- Will the audience wait another 2 years for Bang Di in a new film project?
- No. I don't dare this time. Back then, I was young, I could do one film every two years. But now, I'm 36, 37 years old, if I wait another two years, it means I'm almost 40! So, after finishing this film, if there's a suitable project, I'll continue to participate.
