In a television program broadcast on July 6th, the 38 kg, 0.63-meter-tall, four-legged robot broke the world sprint record for robot dogs, previously held by Boston Dynamics' WildCat model.
According to a video released by CCTV , the Black Panther robot reached a speed of 10.3 m/s in less than 10 seconds while running on a treadmill. For comparison, Usain Bolt, the world record holder for the 100-meter race with a time of 9.58 seconds, has an average speed of approximately 10.44 m/s.
Launched in January of this year, Black Panther is capable of taking up to five strides per second, placing it on the list of the world's fastest four-legged robots.
This robot development project is the result of a collaboration between the Humanoid Robotics Innovation Institute of Zhejiang University and the Hangzhou-based startup Mirror Me.
Over the past few months, the research team has upgraded the robot by merging three previously separate carbon fiber lower leg tubes, improving stability and operational strength.
Currently, black panthers can outrun most humans, but they are still slower than the fastest land animals such as cheetahs, ostriches, or wildebeests.
The development team anticipates that in the future, Black Panther could be applied to areas such as disaster relief or logistics in challenging terrain, such as navigating through earthquake-ravaged areas where traditional methods like humans or vehicles are difficult to access.
