International media goes off air to protest the deaths of journalists in Gaza

More than 250 media outlets from over 70 countries joined a global blackout on September 1 to protest the deaths of many journalists due to Israel's military campaign in Gaza.

More than 250 media agencies from over 70 countries around the world joined the global blackout campaign on September 1 to protest the deaths of many journalists due to Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

As part of the campaign, many newspapers will feature black covers with strong messages. Television and radio stations will pause programming to broadcast a joint message. Online news sites will black out their homepages or display banners expressing solidarity.

Many freelance journalists also joined the campaign and will post messages on their personal social networking sites.

The campaign is organized under the co-sponsorship of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the international advocacy movement Avaaz and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

The campaign aims to protest the rising number of deaths of journalists in Gaza and call for unrestricted access to the press in the Palestinian territory. Since the conflict began in October 2023, more than 210 journalists have been killed in Gaza.

RSF Director Thibaut Bruttin said that with the number of journalists killed in Gaza, there would soon be no one left to provide information to the public. “This is not just a war against Gaza, it is a war against journalism,” he said.

In response to the campaign, the Israeli Foreign Ministry criticized the organizations involved, accusing them of supporting Hamas's "campaign of lies" through the media.

The blackout comes after Israel struck Gaza’s Nasser Hospital last week, killing at least 20 people, including five journalists from Reuters, AP and Al Jazeera. A second attack also targeted rescue workers arriving at the scene.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later declared this a “mistake” and opened an investigation, saying the initial target was a Hamas-operated surveillance camera near the complex./.
