Winning the gold medal in men's football at the 33rd SEA Games in December 2025 in Thailand is not an easy task for the U22 Vietnam team.

Opportunities and challenges

The Vietnam U22 team, with the core of U22 players, has successfully completed two tasks in 2025, including successfully defending the championship of the Southeast Asian U23 Championship and then winning the maximum score in Group C of the 2026 Asian U23 qualifiers, winning a ticket to the final round of the tournament to be held in Saudi Arabia.

In these two tournaments, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team had many advantages when they had careful preparation and were placed in a group that was not too difficult. However, at the 33rd SEA Games, U22 Vietnam faced a big challenge when they were in the same group with U22 Malaysia and U22 Laos - two opponents with many outstanding young players.

For the first time, the SEA Games men's football competition was divided into 3 groups, with groups A and B having 3 teams each and group C having 4 teams. The teams competed in a round robin format, with the top 3 teams in each group and the second-placed team with the best record advancing to the semi-finals.

The new format helps teams not have to compete as frequently in the group stage, but each match is as important as a "final". In group B, Vietnam and Malaysia are highly rated and the result of the direct competition between the two teams will determine the ticket to the semi-finals.

Malaysian football is in the process of naturalizing a series of players in order to raise their class and professional level. Therefore, it is likely that the national U22 team will also strengthen its force with players from Europe, South America...

In addition, U22 Laos is also an "unknown factor" in this tournament. Coach Ha Hyeok-jun of the "Land of a Million Elephants" team said that he will take advantage of the match with the Vietnamese team in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers in November 2025 to train and gain experience for the U22 Laos players, with the aim of preparing for the 33rd SEA Games.

In the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers, Laos also created a surprise when they built a tight defense and disciplined play to hold Indonesia to a draw in the first match of Group J in September 2025. Under coach Ha Hyeok-jun, Laos U22 has clearly improved its physical foundation and tactical tactics.

Strengthen training

Vietnam U22 team had a training trip to UAE in October and played a friendly match with Qatar U23 team during FIFA Days. Despite losing the match, the team led by acting head coach Dinh Hong Vinh showed improvement in tactics and tactics, and selected many potential "new recruits".

In November 2025, the U22 Vietnam team will compete in the U23 international friendly tournament in China. This playground brings together youth teams from China, Korea and Uzbekistan, which are considered to have high professional quality. Competing with the top teams in the continent helps the U22 Vietnam players accumulate real-life experience, practice skills, competitive spirit and improve professional level.

The tournament coincided with the time when Vietnam played Laos in the 5th round of the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup, so coach Kim Sang-sik could not directly lead U22 Vietnam. After the friendly tournament in China, the U22 Vietnam coaching staff will make a list of players to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games.

The current U22 Vietnam squad is a combination of experience and youth, with many faces that have made their names known through the V-League and the national team. Goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien stands out with his height of 1.93 m and excellent blocking reflexes. Meanwhile, the defenders Nhat Minh, Hieu Minh, Ly Duc... have tall stature, strong physical foundation and comprehensive offensive and defensive capabilities.

The group of U23 players who have played for the national team many times, such as Van Khang, Dinh Bac, Thanh Nhan, Thai Son, Van Truong, Quoc Viet... are expected to continue to be the key players of U22 Vietnam. The overseas Vietnamese players Viktor Le, Vadim Nguyen and Tran Thanh Trung all showed their class from the European training "furnace" in their first time playing for U22 Vietnam.
