While the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry accused Belarus of massing troops at the border under the guise of military exercises, the Belarusian president said that Ukraine had deployed up to 120,000 troops there.
In a news report issued on August 26, Reuters stated that Ukraine had called on Belarus to withdraw a large number of Belarusian forces and equipment deployed at the two countries' shared border.
In a statement, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry warned Belarus against making a "tragic mistake" under pressure from the Russian Federation, and called on the Belarusian armed forces to "cease hostilities" and withdraw from the border area.
According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Belarusian special forces and former Wagner mercenary fighters are among the forces deployed on the border along with weapons and equipment such as tanks, artillery, air defense systems, and technical equipment.
These troops are deployed in the Gomel area near Ukraine's northern border.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry statement said that Kyiv "has never and will not take any hostile actions against the people of Belarus."
Earlier, in an interview broadcast on the Telegram channel Pul Pervogo on August 18, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated that the Belarus-Ukraine border was mined "unprecedentedly" and that Ukrainian troops would suffer heavy losses if they attempted to cross the border.
Lukashenko issued the warning along with information that Ukraine has deployed more than 120,000 troops at the border with Belarus, while Belarus has deployed nearly one-third of its armed forces along the entire border.
Lukashenko did not specify the exact number of troops deployed along Belarus's borders, but according to the 2022 Military Balance Report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, Belarus's professional army has approximately 48,000 troops. In addition, the country has around 12,000 border guards.
Reuters further reported that the Belarusian leader's statement came as Ukraine sent thousands of troops across the border with Russia, attacking the Kursk province.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on August 25, this offensive continues to progress as their troops advance another 1-3 km and take control of two more settlements, while actively deploying military action in yet another settlement.
