The application of advances in science and technology in production is becoming an effective solution, not only contributing to improving the quality and value of products, especially local strengths, but also reducing the number of workers involved in the production process. Recorded by a news reporter at Phuong Nam Cooperative, Long Phieng Commune, Yen Chau District, one of the typical units in applying high technology in longan production.
Since its establishment in August 2016, after 8 years of operation, from the initial 80 hectares of longan, Phuong Nam Cooperative has now developed to more than 300 hectares, becoming a specialized longan growing area of Yen Chau district. Strengthening training and mobilizing members to apply techniques in the care and harvesting process is the solution that this Cooperative focuses on implementing, thereby increasing the value of products when sold.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thuy, member of Phuong Nam Cooperative, Long Phieng Commune, Yen Chau, Son La : “Previously, I used manual scissors to make the tree beautiful. Now I use electric scissors, which are more convenient than manual scissors. After pruning the branches, instead of digging and clearing the roots to make them airy, I apply the method of leaving the roots intact to keep them moist and composting them to make the roots loose. So that later the fruit will grow more beautifully.”
Currently, Phuong Nam Cooperative is applying VietGAP process in production, such as: pruning, fertilizing, using pesticides according to the "4 rights" principle of using biological products, natural enemies to protect crops... Especially to reduce labor in production, the Cooperative has used drones to spray pesticides on crops. More than 15 hectares of longan have also been equipped with surveillance cameras to serve the purpose of tracing the origin, ensuring the export of products to demanding markets.
Mr. Cu Quoc Minh, member of Phuong Nam Cooperative, Long Phieng Commune, Yen Chau, Son La: “When joining the Cooperative, we were transferred science and technology such as: drip irrigation, using cameras to observe the production process, and taking care of plants. We also apply spraying pesticides using drones to spray pesticides on crops. Previously, spraying pesticides required labor and could only spray 1 - 1.5 hectares per day. But using this drone, I can spray 5 - 7 hectares”.
With the synchronous implementation of many new scientific and technical solutions, the annual revenue of the cooperative has increased to over 40 billion VND. In particular, last October, Phuong Nam Cooperative was recognized as a high-tech longan production area of Yen Chau district.
Mr. Tran Nhu Kien, Director of Phuong Nam Cooperative, Long Phieng Commune, Yen Chau, Son La: “Previously called agricultural production, but now we have changed from agricultural production to agricultural economics , forcing us to change our thinking to how to make products effectively and with the best productivity. Since the Cooperative was recognized as a high-tech longan production area, we have more motivation. When recognized, we must do better to promote agricultural products better, to bring them to consumers better”.
People raise awareness and thinking in agricultural production, thereby improving the quality and increasing the competitiveness of agricultural products in the market. This is an important task that Son La province is aiming for in order to form and develop a competitive agriculture, contributing to building Son La into a green, fast and sustainable developing province in the spirit of the Resolution of the 15th Son La Provincial Party Congress.
