Grasping Vietnamese consumer spending trends
According to the UOB-BCG ASEAN Consumer Sentiment Study 2024, Vietnamese consumers reported spending more on experiences such as holidays, fine dining, concerts and festivals than their regional peers, with 42% of respondents in Vietnam saying they spent more on these categories, higher than the ASEAN average of 35%. Younger consumers tend to spend more on experiences than other groups, especially Gen Z, with 47% of them saying they spent more on experiential activities.
In terms of overseas spending, more than 70% of Vietnamese consumers said they spent abroad within the ASEAN region in 2024, with Thailand and Singapore being the most popular destinations. Among payment methods abroad, 71% of respondents said they preferred using physical credit/debit cards, or mobile credit/debit cards - while only 38% preferred using cash.
