Given the current situation, Quy Nhon Binh Dinh is considered a strong candidate for direct relegation. Meanwhile,SHB Da Nang is likely to play in the play-off match to secure their place in the V-League next season.
There are unlikely to be any surprises.
After the penultimate round, the race to avoid the 1.5 relegation spots revolves around only three teams: Binh Dinh (21 points), SHB Da Nang (22 points), and Quang Nam (25 points). Quang Nam is the team with the easiest spot, as avoiding the play-off is within reach, needing only one point at Pleiku Stadium in the final round on June 22nd.
The advantage for Quang Nam FC is that the home team, Hoang Anh Gia Lai, has already secured their place in the league and therefore lacks motivation. In their last two matches against two teams battling relegation, Hoang Anh Gia Lai drew 2-2 with Da Nang and lost 2-3 to Song Lam Nghe An.
Separated by just one point, Binh Dinh and Da Nang will have to fight for survival in the final round. Da Nang, in particular, holds its fate in its own hands and has shown the ability to unexpectedly accelerate in the decisive stages. Since their 3-1 victory away at Quy Nhon in round 22, Da Nang has gone on a four-match unbeaten streak (two wins, two draws). Most recently, they drew 2-2 against hosts Hong Linh Ha Tinh after trailing 2-0.
In the final round, Da Nang FC will only face Song Lam Nghe An, who have already secured their place in the league, so they can potentially earn one point to avoid direct relegation. Meanwhile, the chances of hosts Binh Dinh FC earning points against Hanoi FC are very slim.
The sadness of the land of martial arts
Last season, Binh Dinh FC caused a shock by finishing as runners-up in the V-League. But now they are on the verge of relegation, a result few expected. There are many reasons for this, including the loss of many talented players due to financial difficulties.
Coach Bui Doan Quang Huy's illness disrupted the team's morale considerably (he was replaced by Coach Tran Minh Chien after round 22). However, the biggest reason was the defeat against Da Nang at home in the crucial stage of the relegation battle. Despite their best efforts, the players became increasingly helpless and demoralized towards the end.
The defeat at Thong Nhat Stadium on the evening of June 15th almost crushed the remaining fighting spirit of Binh Dinh Club. The players collapsed on the field in disappointment. Even the coaching staff couldn't hide their sadness. "With this loss, we no longer have any hope of avoiding relegation in the V-League. Theoretically, there's still a chance, but the players' morale is very low. We can only try to encourage the players to give their all in the final round to try and compete for a play-off spot," assistant coach Tran Hung Cuong said at the post-match press conference.
With proper investment, many relegated teams can still return to the V-League after just one season. Da Nang FC is one example. But for Binh Dinh FC, the difficulties faced by the sponsor, followed by the merger of Gia Lai and Binh Dinh, have made the club's survival a difficult question.
