Quang Ngai: Roads damaged by landslides, residents of Tay Tra commune feel insecure amidst the rainy season.

The people of Tra Oi and Dong villages (Tay Tra commune, Quang Ngai province) live on high mountain slopes. Heavy rains and floods have caused further landslides on the dirt road, making travel very difficult for the residents.

Tra Oi village is the most remote and difficult-to-reach village in Tay Tra commune. To get to Tra Oi village, home to 106 households and 438 people, residents can only travel on rough, rocky dirt roads.

The road is only 1.7km long, but it's entirely steep mountain slopes. After heavy rain, the dirt road surface became muddy, and landslides created many large trenches, gouging deep cavities right on the road, making even walking extremely difficult.

In Tra Oi village, there is a preschool (part of Tra Xinh Preschool) perched precariously on the hillside, where 29 children aged 3-5 from teams 4 and 5 are taught. The road to school, already long and arduous, becomes even more difficult when it rains, making daily commutes even harder for the children. But the most challenging task remains for the teachers who stay here to teach.

Ms. Ho Thi Kieu said that every morning she has to park her motorbike at the end of the concrete road and walk for more than 30 minutes to get to class. For all these years, Ms. Kieu has never once been able to ride a motorbike to school, spending the whole year walking to class and only returning home once a week.

Ms. Ho Thi Be (from Tra Oi village) shared: “My child studies at this school, and every time it rains, I'm worried. The dirt road is slippery, and the children come home covered in mud, so falls are very common. Without a road, planting acacia trees and farming on the fields is also difficult.”

Besides the road leading to Tra Oi village, the 2.2km road leading to Dong village (with 78 households and 339 people) is also an unpaved road that has suffered severe landslides. The Tay Tra Commune People's Committee reported that the area recently experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall, with precipitation exceeding 300mm at times. The high water levels caused landslides, damaging many vital transportation routes, including the two roads leading to these two villages.

Mr. Truong Cong Lam, Chairman of the Tay Tra Commune People's Committee, said: "The Tay Tra Commune People's Committee requests that relevant authorities consider allocating funds for the urgent construction of two roads leading to Tra Oi and Dong villages, with a total budget of approximately 19 billion VND. This will focus on addressing landslides, constructing drainage ditches and culverts, and paving the road surface..."
