Gia Lai focuses on crop diversification and expanding export-oriented growing areas.

(GLO) - On the morning of December 12th, the Crop Production and Plant Protection Sub-Department (Department of Agriculture and Environment) held a conference to review the work of 2025 and implement directions and tasks for 2026.

By 2025, the province's total cultivated area will reach over 771,000 hectares, exceeding the plan by more than 6,000 hectares. This includes nearly 170,000 hectares of rice, over 46,700 hectares of corn, over 83,600 hectares of cassava; over 108,800 hectares of coffee, nearly 39,900 hectares of cashew nuts, and over 86,390 hectares of rubber…

During the year, localities converted nearly 13,360 hectares of inefficient crops, mainly on rice land frequently affected by drought (5,972 hectares), cassava land (over 6,250 hectares), and sugarcane land (nearly 87 hectares).

To date, the province has over 70,600 hectares of crops certified for good agricultural practices and organic farming, an increase of more than 1,200 hectares compared to 2024. Over 88,700 hectares of crops have applied advanced, water-saving irrigation technology. The province currently has 309 planting area codes, including 255 export planting area codes covering over 10,200 hectares; along with 40 export fruit packaging facility codes with a capacity of 1,650-1,800 tons of fresh fruit per day, mainly serving the markets of China, Australia, Japan, South Korea, etc.

In 2026, the province plans to cultivate over 771,900 hectares, including 168,000 hectares of rice, 47,800 hectares of corn, 81,600 hectares of cassava, 109,000 hectares of coffee, and 85,450 hectares of rubber; with durian and banana each reaching 9,500 hectares. The province also plans to convert 8,150 hectares of low-yield crops and continue to strengthen the management of plant quarantine, fertilizers, pesticides, and plant varieties.

Speaking at the conference, Ms. Nguyen Thi To Tran, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, requested the Sub-Department to focus on transforming the crop structure on areas with low-yield rice, cassava, sugarcane, and cashew cultivation to growing vegetables, beans, fruit trees, medicinal plants, and other high -economic- value crops that are adaptable to climate change.

Ms. Tran also requested the Sub-Department to coordinate with the Agricultural Extension Center to develop effective conversion models; strengthen inspection and detection of pests; and organize training on monitoring pesticide residues. At the same time, she urged continued efforts to promote the establishment of export-oriented planting area codes, especially for durian; strict management of agricultural input production and business activities; and effective implementation of the 2026 crop production plan.
