Van Dijk could face further punishment for red card against Newcastle

VnExpressVnExpress28/08/2023

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk could face retrospective punishment for his excessive reaction after receiving a red card in the match against Newcastle.

Van Dijk pointed at referee John Brooks and used offensive language after being sent off. He also refused to leave the pitch and argued with linesman Craig Pawson when they came face-to-face on the touchline.

According to the Daily Mail , the Dutch player's behavior could get him into trouble. Van Dijk was only suspended for one match for this direct red card, but if found guilty by the FA, the Liverpool defender could be sidelined for a longer period.

Former referee Mike Dean commented: "Van Dijk showed his displeasure by verbally attacking fourth official Craig Pawson. This went too far and violated the FA's code of conduct."

The referees' match reports mention Van Dijk's behavior. According to FA regulations, improper conduct, including uncontrolled speech, can result in retrospective punishment after the match. Several players have been punished for similar offenses in the past. The FA has not yet commented on Van Dijk's case.

Van Dijk received a red card for a foul on Alexander Isak, preventing the Newcastle striker from scoring in the 28th minute. This incident occurred just minutes after Liverpool conceded a goal to Anthony Gordon. However, despite being down to ten men for most of the match, Jurgen Klopp's side staged an incredible comeback thanks to a brace in the final 10 minutes from substitute striker Darwin Nunez.

Despite securing three points, Van Dijk's suspension will be a blow for the Anfield side in the next round, when they host the in-form Aston Villa. Currently, Liverpool sit fourth in the Premier League with seven points after two wins and one draw.
